Hornets Basketball Picks Up 98-74 Win at UHSP

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball picked up a 98-74 win on Saturday afternoon at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy. With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-12 on the season and 2-7 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eutectics fall to 6-11 on the season and 0-8 in AMC play.

Senior guard Bennie Amos III (New Orleans, La./Delgado Community College) would tie the game at two with a jumper. Senior guard Seth Chargois (Tulsa, Okla./Johnson Community College) would give the Hornets the lead with two free throws as the Hornets never trailed in the game again. Junior forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) would make it 6-2 Hornets with a layup. A layup from sophomore guard Justin Coleman (St. Louis, Mo./Delta State University) would give the Hornets an 8-2 lead. After the Eutectics cut the Hornets lead to 8-6 a 10-3 Hornets run pushed the Hornets lead to 18-9. Two free throws from senior forward Jermarco Burse (Annapolis, Mo./Truman State University) pushed the Hornets lead to 22-11. An old fashioned three point play from Amos III and a three from Chargois would push the Hornets lead to 30-19.

The Eutectics would go on an 8-0 run to cut the Hornets lead to 30-27 before a 7-0 run from the Hornets pushed the lead to 37-27 with 5:03 left in the first half. A Coleman layup gave the Hornets a 39-30 lead. After two layups from Chargois the lead was 43-32 Hornets. A three from Amos III would help the Hornets take a 50-37 lead into the half.

An 11-0 run for the Hornets to start the second half saw a jumper for Lampley, a layup from junior guard Justin Edwards (Corona, Calif./Oakwood University), a layup and a three from Amos III and a layup from Coleman to push the lead to 61-37 in favor of the Hornets. Lampley would score the next five Hornets points with a three and a jumper to make it 66-41 Hornets. A three Amos III made it 73-45 Hornets with 12:16 to play. Coleman gave the Hornets their largest lead of the game with a jumper to make it 75-45. A three from Lampley gave the Hornets an 80-52 lead. The Eutectics would score 22 of the final 40 points in the game, but it was too much to overcome as the Hornets picked up the win.

Amos III had a game-high 29 points, while Lampley scored a season-best 26, Chargois added 23 and Coleman finished with 12. Lampley had a career-high 16 rebounds in route to his first double-double of the season. Chargois had three assists and three blocks to lead the Hornets. Coleman added four steals to lead the Hornets.

The Hornets went 31-64 (48.4%) from the field, 8-17 (47.1%) from three and 28-33 (84.8%) at the free throw line. 

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, January 23rd at Emerson Performance Center against Williams Baptist at 7:30 pm.
