Lady Hornets Basketball Picks Up 54-38 Win at Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball picks up 54-38 win on Thursday night at Hannibal-LaGrange to sweep the season series. With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 5-14 on the season and 4-10 in American Midwest Conference play while the Trojans fall to 3-17 on the season an 0-14 in AMC play. The Lady Hornets also sweep the season series against the Trojans.

The Trojans would start the game scoring the first five points before senior guard Samara Swire (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made a three to cut the deficit to 5-3. A layup by senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) would tie the game at five. A layup from Swire and from freshman forward Tyara Davis (Kansas City, Kan./Blue Valley North) made it 9-5 Lady Hornets. A jumper from freshman guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) made it 11-7. A layup from Swire and Davis and a jumper from Montgomery closed the scoring in the first quarter that saw the Lady Hornets hold a 17-12 lead after one.

A layup from freshman guard Jayla Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) opened the scoring in the second quarter to extend the Lady Hornets lead to 19-12. A three from senior guard Lauryn Evans (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) made it 23-14 with a three. Layups from Evans and Davis made it 27-16 Lady Hornets. Two jumpers from Swire, a layup from Davis and two free throws from Jordan gave the Lady Hornets a 35-20 lead at the half.

Back-to-back layups from Jordan gave the Lady Hornets a 39-24 lead with 6:28 left in the third quarter. Two layups from Montgomery made it 43-24 gave the Lady Hornets their largest lead of the night at that time. The Lady Hornets would hold a 43-30 lead going into the fourth.

Free throws from Swire pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 45-32. A made jumper and free throw from Montgomery made it 48-32 Lady Hornets with 6:48 left to play. A jumper from Jordan and two layups from Swire pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 54-34. The Lady Hornets would hold on for a 54-38 win.

Swire led the way with 17 points while Montgomery added 11 and Jordan added 10. Jordan had a game-high 10 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season. Montgomery added four assists in the game. Jordan had a game-high and career-high eight blocks as she just missed a triple-double. Jordan also added three steals.

The Lady Hornets went 23-69 (33.3%) from the field, 2-13 (15.4%) from three and 6-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The Lady Hornets allowed a season-low 38 points in the game. The Lady Hornets also recorded a season-high 11 blocks.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, February 1st at 1 pm against William Woods University at Emerson Performance Center.
