Lady Hornets Volleyball Falls to Philander Smith, Beats Lane

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in three sets (17-25, 23-25, 14-25) to Philander Smith and beat Lane in three sets (25-8, 25-18, 27-25) on Tuesday evening at Emerson Performance Center. With the split, the Lady Hornets are 9-12 on the season.

Philander Smith Match:
The Panthers raced out to a 10-3 lead in set one and forced a Lady Hornets timeout. A kill by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) cut the deficit to 13-5. Kills from sophomore setter Jayla Payne (San Antonio, Texas/Wagner), sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) and senior outside hitter A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock) cut the deficit to 17-8. A kill by Watson, a block by Williams, a block by freshman outside hitter Renise Powell and a service ace by junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) cut the deficit to 18-12. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 22-16. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 24-17 before the Panthers closed out the set on the next point.

A kill by McReynolds and an attack error by the Panthers tied set two at three. A kill by junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) cut the deficit to 6-4. Kills from Williams, Edison and McReynolds and an attack error by the Panthers cut the deficit to 13-11 and forced a Panthers timeout. A kill by McReynolds and back-to-back kills by Watson tied the set at 16. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 20-19. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 23-22. The Panthers score two of the final three points to take set two 25-23.

A kill by Williams cut the deficit to 4-2 early in set three. An 8-0 Panthers run pushed their lead to 12-2. A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City) cut the deficit to 12-3. A kill by Powell cut the deficit to 15-5. A block by Powell and Williams, an attack error by the Panthers, a kill by McReynolds, a kill by Edison and a service ace by junior defensive specialist Jennifer Garcia (Euless, Texas/Euless Trinity) cut the deficit to 19-10. A kill by Edison and a block by McReynolds and junior middle hitter Saniah Files (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) cut the deficit to 22-13. The Panthers scored three of the last four points to win 25-14 to complete the sweep. 

McReynolds lead the way with 12 kills, Smith recorded 12 assists while Garcia added 11 assists. McReynolds recorded three service aces. Junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) recorded seven digs. Williams and Powell each recorded a solo block and block assist. 

Lane Match:
Back-to-back attack errors by the Dragons and a kill by Williams gave the Lady Hornets an early 3-0 lead. A kill by Anderson pushed the lead to 8-2 and forced a timeout by the Dragons.After the timeout, a service ace by Smith, back-to-back attack errors by the Dragons, a kill by Watson, back-to-back kills by McReynolds and another ace by Smith pushed the lead to 15-2. A kill by Powell pushed the lead to 18-5. A kill by McReynolds, an ace by Smith and a bad set by the Dragons gave the Lady Hornets a 25-8 set one win.

The Dragons raced out to a 6-2 lead in set two. A kill by Edison and McReynolds, a Dragons attack error and a service ace by freshman defensive specialist Mya Hendrix tied set two at six. A block by Anderson gave the Lady Hornets a 10-8 lead. A service error by the Dragons, a service ace by Foster, an attack error by the Dragons and a ball handling error by the Dragons pushed the lead to 14-9. A kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 19-17 lead. A service error by the Dragons, an attack error by the Dragons, a set error by the Dragons, back-to-back service aces by McReynolds and a kill by Powell closed set two 25-18 in favor of the Lady Hornets.

A service ace by Hendrix gave the Lady Hornets an early 4-1 lead in set three. A kill by McReynolds made it 8-6 in favor of the Lady Hornets. A kill by Powell, a block by Williams and an attack error by the Dragons made it 12-9 Lady Hornets. A kill by McReynolds extended the lead to 16-12. A 5-0 Dragons run gave them a 17-16 lead. A kill by Powell tied the set at 20. A kill by Edison, an attack error and set error by the Dragons pushed the Lady Hornets to a 24-22 lead. A kill by Smith and an attack error by the Dragons gave the Lady Hornets a 27-25 set three win and completed the sweep.

For the seventh time this season the Lady Hornets won via the sweep.

McReynolds led the way with eight kills. Garcia recorded 13 assists while Smith added 10. Smith recorded three service aces while McReynolds and Hendrix added two each. Junior defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) led the way with six digs. Anderson recorded two solo blocks.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, October 18th as they play two American Midwest Conference matches against Hannibal-LaGrange at 9 am and Columbia College at 11 am. Both matches will be at Hannibal-LaGrange in Hannibal, Mo.
