Lady Hornets Volleyball Beats Eureka in Four Sets

EUREKA, Ill. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball picked up a four set win (22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23) at Eureka College on Tuesday night. With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 11-13 on the season while the Red Devils fall to 7-13 on the season.

Before tonight's match was over the Lady Hornets clinched a spot in the American Midwest Conference volleyball tournament thanks to a Columbia win. The Lady Hornets will make their second appearance in the AMC Tournament in the last three years as they made it in 2023.

The Red Devils raced out to an 11-3 lead in set one. A service error by the Red Devils, a kill by junior defensive specialist Jennifer Garcia (Euless, Texas/Euless Trinity), and a service ace by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) cut the deficit to 11-7. A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) and an attack error by the Red Devils cut the deficit to 13-10. A kill by Williams, a kill by McReynolds, a service ace by junior defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) and a block by Williams tied the set at 14. A kill by Garcia gave the Lady Hornets a 17-16 lead. A kill and ace by McReynolds pushed the lead to 19-17. A 5-0 run by the Red Devils gave them a 22-19 lead. The last six points were split three aside that saw the Red Devils take set one 25-22.

An attack error by the Red Devils, a kill by Garcia, a kill by junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) and a kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 6-2 lead in set two. A kill by sophomore outside hitter Serenity Baker (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) pushed the lead to 8-3. A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City) and back-to-back aces by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) pushed the lead to 12-7. A kill by freshman outside hitter Renise Powell, an ace by Kemp, a block by Williams, an attack error by the Red Devils and a kill by McReynolds pushed the lead to 18-10. A kill by McReynolds and an attack error pushed the lead to 22-14. Three straight attack errors by the Red Devils gave the Lady Hornets a 25-17 win in set two.

A block by Williams and two attack errors by the Red Devils gave the Lady Hornets a 3-1 lead in set three. A 6-1 run by the Red Devils gave them a 7-4 lead. A service error by the Red Devils and back-to-back kills by McReynolds tied the set at seven. With the Red Devils leading 12-9, three consecutive attack errors, a block by Williams, a kill by Edison, an ace by Garcia, a kill by Williams and an attack error by the Red Devils gave the Lady Hornets a 17-12 lead. A kill by Williams, an ace by Kemp and a kill by McReynolds extended the lead to 20-15. A kill by Edison and an attack error by Eureka made it 24-17 Lady Hornets. A 6-0 run by the Red Devils cut the lead to 24-23. A kill by Baker gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set three win and two sets to one lead in the match.

Kills by Edison, Kemp and Foster along with an attack error by the Red Devils gave the Lady Hornets an early 4-1 lead in set four. A kill by Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 5-4 lead. An ace by McReynolds pushed the lead to 8-6. A 9-0 run by the Red Devils gave them a 15-8 lead. A kill by Edison and by McReynolds cut the deficit to 18-12. A kill by Edison, a kill by Anderson and an attack error cut the deficit to 20-16. An attack error by the Red Devils, a block and a kill by Williams and an attack error by the Red Devils tied the set at 22. An attack error by the Red Devils, a service ace by Garcia and an attack error by the Red Devils gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set four win and closed out the match 3-1 in favor of the Lady Hornets.

McReynolds led the way with 11 kills while Williams and Edison added nine apiece. Garcia recorded 18 assists while junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) added 15. Kemp and McReynolds each recorded three serve aces. Foster recorded 27 digs in the match. Williams recorded seven solo blocks. 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, October 25th at 11 am against Crowley's Ridge and 3 pm against Stephens with both games taking place at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy.
