Lady Hornets Volleyball Falls to Crowley's Ridge and Stephens

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in four sets (19-25, 25-22, 16-25, 23-25) to Crowley's Ridge and fell in three sets (11-25, 17-25, 20-25) to Stephens on Saturday at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy. With the two losses, the Lady Hornets fall to 11-15 on the season and 7-8 in American Midwest Conference play. 

Crowley's Ridge Match:
A kill from junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) and a service ace by junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) gave the Lady Hornets a 4-3 lead in set one. A block and a kill by sophomore outside hitter Serenity Baker (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) cut the deficit to 7-6. A kill by freshman outside hitter Renise Powell, a block by Powell and sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) and back-to-back serve aces by junior defensive specialist Jennifer Garcia (Euless, Texas/Euless Trinity) tied the set at 11. A kill by junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) cut the deficit to 16-15. A kill by Powell cut the deficit to 24-19 before the Pioneers closed out set one on the next point.

Kills from Powell, McReynolds, and Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 3-1 lead in set two. A kill by Smith, a block by Williams and a Pioneers attack error pushed the lead to 9-5. A kill by Williams gave the Lady Hornets an 11-10 lead. A block by Baker and Williams, an attack error by the Pioneers, a block by Baker and Williams and an attack error by the Pioneers tied the set at 20. A block by Edison and Williams, a kill by McReynolds and an attack error gave the Lady Hornets a 25-22 set two win. 

In set three the Pioneers raced out to an 8-1 lead. A service error by the Pioneers, back-to-back blocks by sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City) a serve ace by freshman defensive specialist Mya Hendrix and an attack error by the Pioneers cut the deficit to 8-6. A kill by McReynolds an a kill by Anderson tied the set at 10. A kill by Baker, an ace by Garcia and a kill by Garcia cut the deficit to 17-15. The Pioneers closed the set on an 8-1 run to win the set 25-16.

A kill by Williams and Anderson gave the Lady Hornets an early 4-3 lead in set four. A kill by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) tied the set at five. A kill by Powell, an attack error by the Pioneers, a kill by Edison and a block by Edison and Williams gave the Lady Hornets an 11-8 lead. A kill by McReynolds, an attack error by the Pioneers, a kill by McReynolds, back-to-back aces by Hendrix and a block by Edison and Anderson pushed the lead to 18-13. A 6-3 run by the Pioneers cut the Lady Hornets lead to 21-19. A kill by Anderson and a bad set by the Pioneers pushed the lead to 23-19. The Pioneers scored the final six points to win the set 25-23 and the match. 

McReynolds led the way with 10 kills. Garcia recorded 18 assists while Smith added 12. Foster recorded 18 digs while McReynolds added 14 digs and junior defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) added 10 digs. Hendrix and Garcia each recorded three serve aces. Williams recorded one solo and five block assists. McReynolds recorded her fifth double-double of the season.

Stephens Match:
A kill by Williams gave the Lady Hornets an early 3-2 lead in set one. A 10-1 run by the Stars gave them a 12-4 lead. A block by Baker and Anderson cut the deficit to 13-6. An 8-1 run by the Stars pushed their lead to 21-7. A kill by Powell, an attack error by the Stars, a block by Williams and an attack error by the Stars cut the deficit to 21-11. The Stars closed out the set on a 4-0 run.

A kill by Baker cut the Stars lead to 7-6 in set two. A block by Baker cut the deficit to 9-8. A block by Edison and Williams followed by a McReynolds and Williams block cut the deficit to 14-10. A kill by Williams cut the deficit to 18-11. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 19-12. A kill by Anderson, an attack error by the Stars and a block by Williams and Baker cut the deficit to 24-17 before the Stars closed out set two on the next point.

A kill by Garcia tied set three at four. A kill by McReynolds, a kill by Baker, a kill by McReynolds, a kill by Baker and an attack error by the Stars gave the Lady Hornets a 9-7 lead. A 7-1 Stars run would give them a 14-10 lead. A kill by Powell cut the deficit to 16-12. Back-to-back kills by Edison, a bad set and attack error by the Stars cut the deficit to 17-16. The Stars would close out the set and match with an 8-4 run.

Baker would lead the way with five kills, Garcia recorded nine assists, Foster recorded 15 digs while Garcia added 10, Baker and Williams each recorded a solo and three block assists.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, October 28th at 6 pm at Stephens in Columbia, Mo.
