Lady Hornets Volleyball Sweeps Williams Baptist, Falls to Cottey

NEVADA, Mo. Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball won in three sets (25-15, 25-18, 25-20) against Williams Baptist and fell in four sets (20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-28) against Cottey on Saturday afternoon. With the split, the Lady Hornets are 7-11 on the season and 5-5 in American Midwest Conference play.

Williams Baptist Match:
A kill by junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) tied set one at one. A kill from freshman outside hitter Renise Powell, a service ace by freshman defensive specialist Mya Hendrix, back-to-back kills by Edison, a kill by Powell, and a service ace by Hendrix gave the Lady Hornets a 7-2 lead. A kill by junior middle hitter Saniah Files (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and a kill by senior outside hitter A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock) pushed the lead to 11-6. A service ace by junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) made it 13-7 Lady Hornets. Back-to-back service aces by Hendrix pushed the lead to 17-10. A kill by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) pushed the lead to 20-10. Back-to-back attack errors by the Eagles, back-to-back kills by sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) and a kill by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) gave the Lady Hornets a 25-15 set one win.

A kill and service ace by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets an early 2-0 lead in set two. A kill by Powell and Edison made it 4-2 Lady Hornets. A kill by Watson, a service ace, a kill by Williams, an attack error by the Eagles, a service ace by Foster, an attack error by the Eagles and a kill by Foster saw the Lady Hornets go from down 9-6 to up 13-9. A kill by Watson and Edison, a service ace by Smith and an attack error by the Eagles pushed the lead to 17-10. A kill by Edison pushed the lead to 20-13. An attack error by the Eagles, a kill by McReynolds and a block by Files closed out set two 25-19 for the Lady Hornets.

A service error by the Eagles, a kill by McReynolds and an attack error by the Eagles gave the Lady Hornets a 7-6 lead in set three. A kill by McReynolds, an attack error by the Eagles, a block by Edison and sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City), a service ace by Smith and a kill by Anderson pushed the lead to 12-6. A 5-0 run by the Eagles cut the Lady Hornets lead to 15-14. An attack error by the Eagles, a kill by McReynolds and freshman middle blocker Kourtlyn Dowell and back-to-back attack errors by the Eagles pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 22-16. A kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 25-20 set three win to complete the sweep. 

Edison led the way with nine kills. Foster and McReynolds recorded 12 digs each. Hendrix recorded four service aces. Smith recorded 19 assists and three service aces. 

Cottey Match:
A kill by Williams and an ace by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets an early 3-2 lead in set one. A kill by Files and a block by Watson and Files cut the deficit to 9-7. A Comets attack error, a Foster service ace, a block by Watson and Williams and a kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets an 11-10 lead. An 8-2 Comets run gave them an 18-12 lead. A kill by Powell, a service ace by McReynolds and a block by Williams cut the deficit to 18-16. A 7-4 Comets run closed out set one 25-20 in favor of the Comets.

A kill by Powell cut the Lady Hornets deficit to 6-4 in set two. A kill by Powell cut the deficit to 9-7. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 13-10. A service error by the Comets, an attack error by the Comets, a service ace by Hendrix, a kill by Powell and an ace by Hendrix tied set two at 15. A 6-2 run by the Comets gave them a 21-17 lead. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 23-21 before the Comets took the set 25-21. 

A kill by sophomore outside hitter Kaelin Rubin (Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale), back-to-back kills by Edison, a kill by McReynolds, a block by Williams and an attack error by the Comets gave the Lady Hornets a 6-0 lead in set three. An 11-2 run by the Comets gave them an 11-8 lead. A kill by Powell cut the deficit to 15-11. A kill by McReynolds and a block by Edison and Anderson cut the deficit to 18-14. A kill by McReynolds, a kill by Dowell, an ace by McReynolds and a kill by Watson cut the deficit to 20-19. A block by Watson and Williams, a block by Williams and back-to-back attack errors by the Comets gave the Lady Hornets a 24-22 lead. The Lady Hornets won set three 25-23.

The Comets started off set four with a 5-1 lead. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 6-3. A kill by Watson and an ace by Foster cut the deficit to 10-7. A kill by Powell, a kill by Edison, an attack error by the Comets, a kill by Foster, an attack error by the Comets, a block and a kill by Williams gave the Lady Hornets a 16-12 lead that saw them come from down 12-9. A 6-4 run by the Comets cut the Lady Hornets lead to 20-18. A 6-1 run by the Comets gave them a 24-23 lead. A kill by Edison and by junior defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) put the Lady Hornets up 25-24. The Comets closed out the set and match with a 4-1 run.

Powell and Edison each had eight kills. Smith recorded 18 assists. McReynolds had four service aces. Williams had five solo blocks and five block assists. Foster recorded 23 digs.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, October 9th at 6 pm as they continue AMC play at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy.
