Lady Hornets Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller at UHSP

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball picked up a thrilling win in five sets (25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 15-25, 17-15) at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Tuesday night. With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 8-11 in the season and 6-5 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eutectics fall to 3-18 on the season and 3-6 in AMC play. With the six wins in AMC play this season it sets a program record for conference wins.

A kill by junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) tied set one at one. A bad set by the Eutectics, a block by junior middle hitter Saniah Files (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and freshman outside hitter Renise Powell, an attack error by the Eutectics and a service ace by senior defensive specialist Makayla Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas/Lawton) gave the Lady Hornets a 5-2 lead. A kill by Edison, a service ace by sophomore setter Jayla Payne (San Antonio, Texas/Wagner) and an attack error by the Eutectics gave the Lady Hornets an 8-3 and forced a timeout by the Eutectics. A 6-1 run by the Eutectics tied the set at nine. A block by sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) and junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) gave the Lady Hornets a 12-10 lead. A kill by Williams made it 14-13 Lady Hornets. A kill by Files and a service ace by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) tied the set at 18. A service error and attack error by the Eutectics, back-to-back service ace by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 23-21 lead. A block by Files and Powell closed out set one in favor of the Lady Hornets 25-22.

In set two, the Eutectics raced out to a 3-0 lead. A kill by McReynolds, three consecutive errors by the Eutectics, a kill by Edison and a block by Williams made it 6-3 Lady Hornets and forced a timeout by the Eutectics. A kill by Files pushed the lead to 8-4. An error by the Eutectics, an ace by Payne, an attack error by the Eutectics and an ace by Payne pushed the lead to 12-6. An 8-1 run by the Eutectics gave them a 14-13 lead and forced a timeout by the Lady Hornets. A block by Edison and Williams tied the set at 16. A kill by McReynolds, an attack error by the Eutectics, a block by Williams and Powell, a block by Williams and Edison, and back-to-back kills by Powell gave the Lady Hornets a 22-18 lead. A kill by Edison and a kill by McReynolds made it 24-20. McReynolds closed out the set with a kill to give the Lady Hornets a 25-21 set two win.

A kill by Williams and by Powell gave the Lady Hornets an early 2-0 lead in set three. A kill by Edison and a kill by sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City) gave the Lady Hornets a 5-2 lead. A kill by senior outside hitter A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock) made it 7-6 Lady Hornets. A service ace by junior defensive specialist Jennifer Garcia (Euless, Texas/Euless) gave the Lady Hornets a 10-7 lead. A 5-1 run by the Eutectics gave them a 12-11 lead. A kill by Watson tied the set at 16. McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 19-18 lead. A kill by Williams, an attack error by the Eutectics and a kill by Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 22-21 lead. The Eutectics closed out set three on a 4-1 run to win 25-23 to force a fifth set.

The Eutectics raced out to a 7-2 lead in set four. A block by Files cut the deficit to 9-4. Kills from Powell, Anderson, Watson and McReynolds cut the deficit to 10-8 and forced a Eutectics timeout. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 15-10. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 19-11. A service ace by Hernandez cut the deficit to 20-13. A kill by Powell and an ace by Payne cut the deficit to 22-15. The Eutectics took set four 25-15 to force a fifth and decisive set.

A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth set. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 4-3. A kill by McReynolds and an attack error by Eutectics tied the score at six. A kill by Williams tied the set at eight. A block by Williams and McReynolds cut the deficit to 10-9. A kill by Powell cut the deficit to 12-10. Back-to-back errors by Eutectics cut the deficit to 13-12. A kill by McReynolds tied the score 14. A kill by McReynolds and back-to-back service aces gave the Lady Hornets a 17-15 set five win and match win.

Edison had a career-high 13 kills to lead the Lady Hornets while McReynolds added 12 kills. Junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) recorded 22 assists. Payne had a season-high four service aces, Hernandez had a season-high three service aces and Foster added three service aces. Foster had a game-high 25 digs. Williams recorded one solo block and five block assists.

The Lady Hornets recorded their second highest total in service aces, third highest total in kills and fourth highest total in blocks.

The Lady Hornets return to action next Tuesday, October 14th at 2 pm against Philander Smith and 6 pm against Lane at Emerson Performance Center.
