Lady Hornets Volleyball Wins in Five Sets on Senior Night Over UHSP

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball picked up a five set (24-26, 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 15-9) win over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Wednesday night at Emerson Performance Center. With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 12-17 on the season and 8-10 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eutectics fall to 7-25 on the season and 6-10 in AMC play.

Tonight's game was senior night and two players were honored before the game. Senior outside hitter Rakyla Witcher (East St. Louis, Ill./LeMoyne-Owen College) and senior outside hitter A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock High School).

A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic), a block by Williams and junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central), a kill by Edison and a Eutectics attack error gave the Lady Hornets a 5-1 lead in set one. A kill by Edison made it 7-6 Lady Hornets. A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City High School) cut the deficit to 10-9. A kill by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic), a kill by Edison and an attack error by the Eutectics tied the set at 14. A kill by Watson and a block by Anderson and freshman outside hitter Renise Powell cut the deficit to 18-17. A 6-1 run by the Eutectics gave them a 24-19 lead. A block by Williams and a Kill by McReynolds were the last two points of a 5-0 Lady Hornets run that tied the set at 24. The Eutectics would score the final two points of the set to win 26-24.

A kill by McReynolds tied set two at two. A kill by Watson tied the set at five. A 6-0 run by the Eutectics gave them an 11-5 lead. A kill by Watson and four consecutive errors by the Eutectics trimmed the Eutectics lead to 13-11. A kill by Anderson, a service ace by McReynolds, an attack error by the Eutectics, a kill by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods), a block by Watson and Anderson and  a serve ace by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 21-17 lead. A serve error by the Eutectics and a block by Williams and Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 25-20 set two win. 

A kill by Williams cut the Eutectics lead to 5-2 early in set three. A 4-0 run by the Eutectics extended their lead to 11-3 and forced a timeout. Out the timeout, Watson would record a kill to cut the deficit to 11-4. A kill by Powell, an attack error by the Eutectics and a block by Williams and Edison cut the deficit to 14-8. A kill and ace by McReynolds cut the deficit to 20-14. A kill by Williams cut the deficit to 22-16. The Eutectics would close out the set on a 3-1 run to win the set 25-17 and hold a two sets to one advantage.

A kill by Williams, a kill by McReynolds, a serve ace by junior defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy), an attack error by the Eutectics, a block by Williams and a kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a quick 6-0 lead. A kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 10-6 lead. A kill by Powell extended the lead to 13-8. A kill by Williams, an attack error by the Eutectics, a serve ace by junior defensive specialist Jennifer Garcia (Euless, Texas/Euless Trinity) and a block by Williams and Edison pushed the lead to 17-9. A 7-2 run by the Eutectics trimmed the Lady Hornets lead to 19-16. A kill by Edison made it 20-16. A kill by Watson, an attack error by the Eutectics and a kill by Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 25-20 set four win and forced a fifth and decisive set.

A kill by Edison and a block by Powell and Williams gave the Lady Hornets an quick 2-0 lead to start set five. A kill by Williams and a Eutectics attack error gave the Lady Hornets a 5-3 lead. A kill by Edison and McReynolds and two attack errors by the Eutectics gave the Lady Hornets a 9-6 lead. A kill by Watson extended the lead to 12-8. An ace by Foster pushed the lead to 13-8. A kill by Watson and by Foster would close out the set and match in favor of the Lady Hornets.

McReynolds led the way with 12 kills while Williams added 10. Garcia recorded 24 assists while junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) added 21. Kemp and Foster recorded 14 digs each and McReynolds added 11. Garcia recorded two serve aces. Williams added three solo blocks and six block assists. McReynolds recorded her sixth double-double of the season.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Friday, November 14th in the AMC Tournament Quarterfinal at the Bradley Beal Center in Chesterfield, Mo. The time and opponent are still to be determined.
