Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime to Central Baptist

CONWAY, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball falls 91-85 in overtime at Central Baptist on Thursday night. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-9 on the season and 0-2 in American Midwest Conference play while the Mustangs improve to 4-8 on the season and 1-0 in AMC play.

Two layups from freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) gave the Hornets an early 4-0 lead. Davis would score the first seven points for the Hornets. A three by junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) gave the Hornets a 10-8 lead. A layup by junior guard Shamar Carter (Inglewood, Calif./Moberly CC) extended the lead to 12-8. A layup by senior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University), a three by Davis, a layup by senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) and a three by Carter pushed the Hornets lead to 22-10. A dunk by Carter pushed the lead to 24-12.

A three by Carter extended the lead to 29-19 with just over nine minutes to play in the first half. A layup by sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets a 34-30 lead. A jumper from senior center Greg Wilson (Kansas City, Kan./Voorhees University) tied the game at 38. A tip in at the rim by Lawson tied the game at 40 and a tip by Carter tied the game at 42. The Mustangs scored the final four points in the half to hold a 46-42 lead at the break.

A layup by Davis cut the deficit to 48-44 early in the second half. A layup by Cast cut the deficit to 48-47. A layup by Stojanovic put the Hornets on top 49-48. A jumper by Stojanovic cut the deficit to 53-51. A layup by Carter and a three by Cast tied the game at 56 with just over 13 minutes to play in the second half. A three by senior forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) and a layup by sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University) gave the Hornets a 61-60 lead. An old-fashioned three point play by Davis cut the deficit to 68-63. A layup by Davis cut the deficit to 72-66. A layup by Lawson and a three by Cast cut the deficit to 74-72. Two free throws by Lawson, a jumper and a layup by Wilson tied the game at 78 with just under two minutes to play. A monstrous dunk by Lawson tied the game at 81. Lawson would tie the game at 83 with two free throws to force overtime.

The Hornets would be outscored 8-2 in overtime as Carter would score the only two points for the Hornets in the overtime period with two free throws.

Davis would lead the way with 25 points while Carter added 16, Lawson added 12 and Cast added 11. Carter recorded a game-high 15 rebounds as he recorded his third double-double of the season. Carter led the way with six assists. Davis led the way with three steals. Carter and Lampley both recorded a block. The 15 rebounds and six assists by Carter were a game-high by a Hornets player this season.

The Hornets went 32-62 (51.6%) from the field, 7-20 (35.0%) from three and 14-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line. The 85 points are tied for the second most points scored in a game this season by the Hornets as they scored 85 points against Culver-Stockton on November 8th. The 51.6% from the field was the best in a game this season by the Hornets.

The Hornets return to action on Friday, December 12th at 6 pm against Spalding University at Webster University in Webster Groves, Mo. as part of the Gorlok Classic.
