WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball picked up a thrilling 98-97 overtime win against Spalding University on Friday night in the Gorlok Classic hosted by Webster University. With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-9 on the season while the Golden Eagles fall to 4-5 on the season.
Senior forward
Greg Wilson (Kansas City, Kan./Voorhees University) would tied the game at two with a layup. A jumper by junior guard
Shamar Carter (Inglewood, Calif./Moberly CC), a layup by Wilson and a layup by junior guard
Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) gave the Hornets an 8-4 lead. A three by Carter extended the lead to 11-6. Another three from Carter extended the lead to 14-8. A layup and a three by senior center
Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) pushed the Hornets lead to 19-8. A layup by freshman forward
Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) would extend the lead to 22-15.
A layup by sophomore guard
Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) pushed the lead to 27-19 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half. A three by Carter would extend the lead to 30-26. A floater by Davis and a three by freshman guard
Christian Dake (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North High School)Â extended the Hornets lead to 37-30. Two free throws by Carter would give the Hornets a 39-35 lead before the Hornets would hold a 39-38 lead at halftime.
A layup by Davis would tie the game at 41 early in the second half. A layup by Davis tied the game at 43. Cast would cut the deficit to 47-45 with a jumper. A three by Carter cut the Golden Eagles lead to 49-48. A three from Carter tied the game at 51. Carter would give the Hornets a 54-53 lead with his third consecutive three on three consecutive Hornets possessions. A layup from Wilson tied the game at 56. A layup by Davis gave the Hornets a 58-56 lead. An 11-2 run by the Golden Eagles would give them a 67-60 lead.
A jumper by senior forward
Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) cut the deficit to 69-64 with just under eight minutes to play in the second half. A layup by Davis cut the deficit to 73-67. A three by Davis on the Hornets next possession cut the deficit to 75-70. A three by Carter and a layup by Davis cut the deficit to 77-75. Two free throws by Lawson cut the deficit to 79-78 with 3:01 to play. A layup by Lawson and a jumper by Lampley gave the Hornets an 82-81 lead. An old fashioned three point play by Davis gave the Hornets an 86-83 lead. A banked in three by the Golden Eagles would tie the game at 86 and force overtime.
Two free throws by Lawson would tie the game at 88 early in the overtime period. A three by Davis gave the Hornets a 91-89 lead. A deep three from Cast gave the Hornets a 96-91 lead with 1:25 remaining in overtime. Davis would give the Hornets a 98-97 lead with a free throw with 13 seconds remaining as the Hornets would hold off the last second attempt from the Golden Eagles.
Davis led the way with a career-high 29 points, in which 25 points came in the second half and overtime while Carter added 26 points including seven made threes and Cast added 10 points. Davis led the way with eight rebounds. Cast would add in four assists. Davis recorded three steals. Stojanovic and and Carter would record a block each.
The Hornets went 34-62 (54.8%) from the field, 12-19 (63.2%) from three and 18-27 (66.7%) from the free throw line. The 54.8% from the field and 63.2% from three were both season-highs for the Hornets.
The 98 points were the most in a game this season by the Hornets. Carter's seven made threes were the most by a Hornets player in a game this season. Davis's 29 points were the most points scored by a Hornet this season. The 12 made threes were the most in a game this season by the Hornets.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday, December 13th at 3 pm in the Gorlok Classic against the host Webster University.
