Men's Basketball Falls 90-82 to Bethel

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 90-82 on Tuesday night at Emerson Performance Center to Bethel (Tenn.) University. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-6 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 8-1.

A three by junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) gave the Hornets a 4-3 lead two minutes in. A layup by sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) cut the Wildcats lead to 9-6. A 6-1 Wildcats run would give them a 15-7 lead. The Hornets would use a 9-0 run that saw sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University) make two free throws, a layup by senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College), a layup by freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College), a free throw by Watson and a layup by junior guard Shamar Carter (Inglewood, Calif./Moberly CC) to put the Hornets up 16-15. A three by Carter would tie the game at 19 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half.

Davis would score four straight points to help the Hornets stay tied at 23. A three by Carter and a layup by Davis would help the Hornets take a 28-25 lead. A layup by Davis cut the deficit to 33-32. A layup by Lawson and a three by Carter gave the Hornets a 37-36 lead with just over two minutes to play in the first half. Two free throws by Carter tied the game at 41. Watson would make a free throw to give the Hornets a 42-41 lead going to halftime. 

A jumper by senior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) would extend the lead to 44-41 early in the second half. A 16-2 Wildcats run would give them a 57-42 lead. A layup by Stojanovic, a jumper by Lawson and a layup by Davis helped the Hornets close the gap to 57-52. A jumper by Davis, a three from senior forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) and a powerful one-handed jam by Davis tied the game at 59 with under 10 minutes to play. Two free throws by Cast cut the deficit to 63-61. A three by Carter cut the deficit to 67-65 with under eight minutes remaining. Two free throws by Stojanovic and a layup by Davis tied the game at 69. Two free throws by Davis tied the game at 71. A jumper by Lawson cut the deficit to 80-77 with just under 90 seconds remaining. Three free throws by Carter cut the deficit to 88-82 before the Wildcats would hold on for a 90-82 win.

Davis would lead the way with a game and career-high 25 points while Carter added 19 and Lawson added 14. Carter would grab 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Davis and Cast would record three assists apiece. Stojanovic and Lampley would each block three shots. Cast added two steals.

The Hornets went 27-60 (45.0%) from the field, 6-13 (46.2%) from three and 22-32 (68.8%) from the free throw line. The Hornets recorded a team-high 42 rebounds and 16 offensive rebounds as well as seven blocks.

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, December 4th at 7 pm at Emerson Performance Center against #3 Freed-Hardeman.
