Lady Hornets Basketball Falls at Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball fell 70-53 on Thursday night at Columbia. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 7-18 on the season and 6-13 in American Midwest Conference play while the Cougars improve to 23-2 on the season and 17-2 in AMC play.

A layup from junior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) and a jumper from freshman guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) gave the Lady Hornets an early 4-0 lead. The Cougars would go on a 10-0 run that would end on a layup by senior forward Toree Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) to cut the Cougars lead to 10-6. A layup from freshman forward Tyara Davis (Kansas City, Kan./Blue Valley North) cut the deficit to 13-8. A layup by Dilosa cut the deficit to 17-12. A layup from senior guard Samara Swire (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) cut the deficit to 17-14 going into the second quarter.

Two free throws from Dilosa cut the deficit to 17-16. A layup from Dilosa cut the deficit to 21-20. The Cougars would go on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 29-20. A layup from Swire would halt the Cougars run and cut the deficit to 29-22. A jumper from freshman guard Jayla Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) would cut the Cougars lead to 31-26. The Lady Hornets would cut the deficit to 32-29 going into halftime.

Dilosa would score the first six points in the second half for the Lady Hornets as the Cougars would hold a 38-35 lead. The Cougars would extend their lead to 46-35 with an 8-0 run before Toree Jackson made a layup. Two free throws from Swire cut the deficit to 46-39. A three from Dilosa cut the deficit to 48-44 with 1:56 left in the third quarter. The Cougars would score four of the final six points in the quarter to hold a 52-46 lead after three quarters of play.

A layup from Dilosa cut the Cougars lead to 54-49. A layup and free throw from Swire would cut the Cougars lead to 61-53. The Cougars would close on a 9-0 run to pick up the 70-53 win.

Dilosa would lead the way with 20 points while Swire added 13. Senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central), Toree Jackson and Davis would all record seven rebounds. Davis, Swire and Dilosa would all record an assist. Jordan would record three blocks. Swire, Jordan and Toree Jackson would record one steal each.

The Lady Hornets went 22-65 (33.8%) from the field, 1-8 (12.5%) from three and 8-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, February 15th at 1 pm against Cottey College in Nevada, Mo.
