Lady Hornets Basketball Falls in Hard Fought Game at Stephens

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball fell 67-62 at Stephens College on Thursday night. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 5-16 on the season and 4-12 in American Midwest Conference play while the Stars improve to 14-8 on the season and 11-5 in AMC play.

Junior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) would make a three to cut the deficit to 4-3 just over a minute into the game. A layup from senior forward Toree Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) would give the Lady Hornets a 6-4 lead. Two free throws from senior guard Samara Swire (Tinley PArk, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) cut the deficit to 10-9. Two free throws from Dilosa cut the deficit to 12-11. A layup from Swire cut the Stars lead to 16-15 before the Stars held an 18-15 lead after one quarter of play.

A three from Dilosa and two free throws from Swire cut the deficit to 23-20 early in the second quarter. A jumper from senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) cut the deficit to 27-24. The Stars would close the quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 34-26 at the half.

A layup and free throw from Jordan cut the Stars lead to 41-30. A three from Dilosa and two made free throws from freshman guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) cut the deficit to 45-35. A layup from Jackson cut the deficit to 47-41 with two minutes left in the third quarter. A three from Montgomery cut the Stars lead to 52-46 going into the fourth quarter.

A jumper from Jordan cut the deficit to 56-48 with just under eight minutes to play. A layup and free throw from Dilosa cut the deficit to 66-59 with 2:34 left in the game. A three from Montgomery would cut the Stars lead to 66-62 with 1:59 left to play. The Stars would score the final point to pick up the 67-62 win.

Swire would lead the way with 18 points off the bench while Jordan and Dilosa added 14 points each and Montgomery added 11. Jordan had nine rebounds. Swire added three assists. Dilosa and Swire had two steals each. Swire scored 14 points at the free throw line which was the most made free throws by an individual player in a game.

The Lady Hornets went 17-53 (32.1%) from the field, 5-12 (41.7%) from three and 23-26 (88.5%) which was a season-high free throw percentage for a game.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, February 8th at 1 pm at Central Baptist in Conway, Ark.
