BIRMINGHAM, Ill. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 8-4 to Dillard on Saturday afternoon at Rickwood Field on day two of the Willie Mays Classic. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-3 on the season while the Blue Devils improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Blue Devils would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before adding two more runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth to hold a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
Senior outfielder
Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) would single to start the sixth. Senior third baseman
Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would follow Tillman with a single. Junior first baseman
Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peters, Mo.) would be hit by pitch to load the bases with one out. Tillman would score on a fielder's choice as senior outfielder
Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) would pick up a run batted in. Sophomore catcher
Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) would single in Gutierrez to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Blue Devils would score four runs in the seventh to hold an 8-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Junior middle infielder
Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) would single to center to leadoff the bottom of the seventh. Senior shortstop
Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) would double to left. A groundout by Tillman would score Khatkar to cut the deficit to 8-3. An RBI groundout from Gutierrez would cut the deficit to 8-4.
Tillman would go 2-3 at the plate with an RBI, Gutierrez went 1-2 with an RBI, Kelly and Cornell-Dima were 1-3 with an RBI each. Senior right handed pitcher
Joseph Mann (Bacolod, Philipines) went five innings giving up three runs with just one earned run.
The Hornets return to action on Sunday, February 9th at 11:45 am against Stillman as they close out the Willie Mays Classic.
