Baseball Closes Out Willie Mays Classic with 10-7 Win Over Stillman

BIRMINGHAM, Al. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball concluded the Willie Mays Classic at Rickwood Field with a 10-7 win over Stillman on Sunday morning. With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-3 on the season while Stillman falls to 1-5.

Senior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) singled to start the second inning. A one out double from senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) would move Mann to third. Freshman third baseman Khalil Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) would walk with the bases loaded to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. A two out single from senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) would score Kelly and freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) to make it 3-0 Hornets.

Mann would reach third on an error with two outs in the third. A walk to junior first baseman Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peters, Mo.) would bring up Kelly. A single from Kelly scored Mann and move Schwerdt to third. A wild pitch would score Schwerdt and push the lead to 5-0.

Stillman would score two in the bottom of the third to cut the Hornets lead to 5-2. A one out walk to Martin in the fourth would start the Hornets rally. A single by junior middle infielder Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) and senior third baseman Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would load the bases. Mann would dobule in Martin and Khatkar to push the lead back to five. A single from Schwerdt would score Gutierrez to make it 8-2 Hornets.

Stillman would score one run in the fourth to cut the Hornets lead to 8-3. Two more runs from Stillman would cut the Hornets lead to 8-5. 

A two out single by Smith, a walk to freshman outfielder Yabnel Mojica (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) and a hit by pitch to Martin would load the bases. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) would single in Smith and Mojica to extend the lead to 10-5. Stillman would score two in the seventh as the Hornets held on for the 10-7 win.

Sophomore right handed pitcher Avion Wallace (Lee's Summit, Mo.) would pick up the win after pitching four innings while allowing three runs (two earned). Junior right handed pitcher Keke Romero (Mesa, Az.) would pitch the final three innings to pick up the save.

Khatkar, Mann, Kelly and Matthews would record two hits each in the game. Martin, Bradley, and Mann would record two runs batted in each.

The Hornets return to action on Friday, February 14th at Lincoln University of Missouri in Jefferson City, Mo. with games at 12 pm and 3 pm.
