Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell in both games of the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Columbia at Battle High School. In game one, the Cougars picked up a 9-2 win and a 15-6 win in game two. The Hornets fall to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in American Midwest Conference play while the Cougars improve to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in AMC play.
Game One:
The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the first. They added one in the second and two in the third to hold a 4-0 lead.Â
After freshman catcher
Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) was hit by pitch with one out in the bottom of the fifth, freshman third baseman
Khalil Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) was used as a courtesy runner for Matthews. A triple to right field by senior outfielder
Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) cut the Cougars lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth senior outfielder
Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) would cut the lead to 4-2 with a solo homerun to left. A three run top of the seventh for the Cougars extended their lead to 7-2.
Tillman recorded two hits, while Mann, senior shortstop
Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.), and freshman outfielder
Yabnel Mojica (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) all recorded one hit.
Game Two:
The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first.Â
A walk to Martin and senior third baseman
Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) made it first and second with one out. A throwing error allowed Smith to score and cut the Cougars lead to 3-1 after he pinch ran for Martin. A walk to Mann put runners on the corners for the Hornets. Freshman first baseman
Miguel Navarro (Raytown, Mo.) recorded a run batted in on a fielders choice that scored Gutierrez that cut the lead to 3-2.
A run in the second, six in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth pushed the Cougars lead to 15-2.
Sophomore pitcher
Christopher Alvarez (Dominican Republic) was hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore shortstop
Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) followed with a single. Junior utility player
Sam Britton (St. Louis, Mo.) was hit by pitch to load the bases. Alvarez would score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 15-3. Freshman centerfielder
Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) reached on an erros that scored Bradley. A single by junior first baseman
Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peter's Mo.) scored Britton to cut it to 15-5. A sacrifice fly by senior outfielder
Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) scored Martinez to cut it to 15-6.
Kelly and Matthews recorded two hits each while Bradley, Schwerdt and junior middle infielder
Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) all added a hit.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday, March 1st at 5:30 and 7:30 pm against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Alton, Ill.
