Hornets Baseball Falls to Columbia in Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 21-4 in game one and 22-9 in game two to Columbia College on Tuesday afternoon at Stars Park. With the losses, the Hornets fall to 3-14 on the season and 1-11 in American Midwest Conference play while the Cougars improve to 15-3 and 10-2 in AMC play.

In game one, the Cougars struck for two in the first, four in the second and two in the third to hold an 8-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, junior middle infielder Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) reached on an error. Khatkar moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single by senior outfielder Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.). Sophomore catcher Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) singled down the right field line to score Khatkar and move Tillman to third. Senior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) doubled down the right field line to score Tillman and move freshman centerfielder Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) to third as Martinez ran for Cornell-Neal. Senior pitcher Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) singled to center to score Mann and Martinez to cut the deficit to 8-4. 

The Cougars added one in the fourth, two in the fifth, three in sixth and seven in the seventh. Tillman, Cornell-Neal, Mann, Huggins, senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) and senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) all had one hit. Huggins had two runs batted in while Mann and Cornell-Neal had one.

In game two, the Cougars scored three in the first. Martin walked to start the bottom of the first and would be followed by a hit by pitch to Tillman. Huggins would walk to load the bases. Mann doubled in Martin and Tillman to cut it to 3-2. Freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) grounded out to score Huggins to tie it at three. Kelly grounded out to score Mann to give the Hornets a 4-3. The Cougars scored 10 in the second to go up 13-4. 

Martin reached first on an error and then stole second. Huggins would single to score Martin to cut it to 13-5. The Cougars scored two in third, three in the fourth and four in the sixth to hold a 22-5 lead. Sophomore Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.) walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore second baseman Amilio Rentaria (Houston, Texas) would walk. Freshman outfielder Yabnel Mojica (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) would walk to load the bases. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled home Henderson and Mojica. Martin hit a sacrifice fly to score Mojica. Bradley would score on a passed ball to bring the score to 22-9.

Mojica led the way with three hits while Martin, Huggins, Mann, Kelly, and Bradley all added a hit. Mann and Bradley each recorded two RBI's while Martin, Huggins, Matthews and Kelly all had one.

The Hornets return to action on Friday, March 14th at 12 and 2 pm at Williams Baptist in Walnut Ridge, Ark.
