Hornets Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Williams Baptist

WALLNUT RIDGE, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 3-2 in game one and won 6-5 in game two on Friday morning and early afternoon at Williams Baptist. With the split, the Hornets are 4-17 on the season and 2-14 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eagles are 15-9 on the season and 8-8 in AMC play.

In game one, the Eagles scored two runs in the third to go up 2-0. In the top of the fourth, sophomore catcher Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) walked to start the inning. Senior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) singled. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) would walk with the bases loaded to score Mann. The Eagles would score one in the bottom of the fourth to get their two run lead back at 3-1. Senior outfielder Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) would single with one out. Cornell-Neal would follow suit with a single to move Tillman to second. Mann would single to score Tillman to cut the Eagles lead to 3-2.

Mann would lead the way with two hits while Tillman, Cornell-Neal, senior first baseman Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) and freshman centerfielder Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) would all record one hit. Bradley and Mann each had a run batted in. Senior right handed pitcher Joseph Mann (Bacolod, Phillipines) would toss all six innigs while giving up three earned runs.

In game two, the Eagles scored one in the first. Freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) would walk to start the second. Senior third baseman Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would double to move Matthews to third. Martinez singled to right to score Matthews and move Gutierrez to third. Senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Gutierrez to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. The Eagles would tie the game with one run in the bottom of the second and take a 5-2 lead with three runs in the third. 

Skywalker Mann would walk with two outs in the fifth. Senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) would single and advance Mann to second. Matthews was hit by pitch to load the bases. Gutierrez reached on and error to score Mann to cut the Eagles lead to 5-3. In the sixth, Martinez walked and then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Huggins would walk and then steal second. Mann was hit by pitch to load the bases. Kelly would deliver a go ahead three run double down the leftfield line to score Martinez, Huggins and Mann to put the Hornets on top 6-5. 

Junior right handed pitcher Keke Romero (Mesa, Az.) would work out of a jam in the sixth and finish off the complete game with a one, two, three seventh.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, March 19th at 4 pm against Rust College at Stars Park.
