ALTON, Ill. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball splits double header after falling 5-4 in game one and winning 5-3 in game two against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Sunday afternoon at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Alton, Ill. With the split, the Hornets are 3-8 on the season and 1-5 in American Midwest Conference play and the Eutectics are 6-9 on the season and 3-5 in AMC play.
In game one, the Hornets led 2-0 three hitters into the game. A single by senior outfielder
Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) led off the game. Tillman would steal second and score on a double by freshman outfielder
Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.). Martinez would score on a double by senior first baseman
Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.). The Eutecits would cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Hornets would regain their two run lead with a run in the fifth. Martinez would single and steal second. Huggins would follow with a walk. Senior third baseman
Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would single in Martinez to make it 3-1 Hornets.
Junior utility player
Sam Britton (St. Louis, Mo.) would single to right, steal second and move to third on a wild pitch. Tillman would record a sacrifice fly to score Britton to make it 4-1 Hornets. A four run bottom of the sixth gave the Eutectics a 5-4 lead as they would hold on to win.
Martinez recorded three hits, while Tillman, Gutierrez, Huggins, Britton, sophomore catcher
Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) and senior outfielder
Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) all recorded a hit. Tillman, Martinez, Huggins and Gutierrez all recorded a run batted in.
In game two, the Hornets would race out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Tillman walked to lead off the game. Martinez and Huggins followed with singles to load the bases. Senior outfielder
Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Gutierrez doubled to score Martinez to make it 2-0. Freshman catcher Jayden Mattews (Fayetteville, Ark.) would record an RBI on a groundout that would score Huggins. Kelly would single in Gutierrez.
The Eutectics would score three in the bottom of the fourth to cut the score to 4-3. Tillman would walk to start the fifth. Tillman would move to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on an error. Mann would hit into a fielder's choice that would score Tillman to make it 5-3.
Senior right handed pitcher
Joseph Mann (Bacolod, Phillipines) would pick up his first win of the season after pitching six innings while allowing three runs. Junior right handed pitcher
Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peters, Mo.) would record a save after pitching a scoreless seventh.
Martinez, Huggins, Gutierrez and Kelly all recorded a hit. Mann recorded two RBI's while Kelly and Matthews had one.
The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, March 4th at 2 and 5 pm against LeMoyne-Owen at Stars Park.
