Hornets Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Central Baptist

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball lost 8-5 in game one and won 4-2 in game two of the doubleheader against Central Baptist on Friday afternoon at Stars Park. With the split, Hornets are now 5-19 on the season and 3-15 in American Midwest Conference play while the Mustangs are 16-13 on the season and 13-5 in AMC play.

In game one, the Mustangs scored one run in the first, three in the second and sixth innings and one in the seventh to hold and 8-0 lead going to the bottom of the seventh.

Senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) walked to start the Hornets seventh. Senior ourfielder Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled to left to move Martin to second. Both Martin and Tillman would advance on a groundout. Senior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) would homer to center to cut the Mustangs lead to 8-3. Freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) was hit by pitch. Senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) would walk to move freshman outfielder Yabnel Mojica (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) to second. Kelly and Mojica would advance on a balk. Mojica would score on a wild pitch. Sophomore second baseman Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) would record a sacrifice fly to score Kelly to make it 8-5 Mustangs.

Mann would record two hits while Tillman and senior third baseman Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would record one hit each. Mann would record three runs batted in while Bradley had one.

In game two, the Mustangs would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Tillman would double to start the bottom of the second. Sophomore catcher Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) would double to score Tillman and tie the game at one. Senior first baseman Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) walked. Huggins would steal second and advance to third on a throwing error that allowed junior utility player Sam Britton (St. Louis, Mo.) to score as he ran for Cornell-Neal to make it 2-1 Hornets. Bradley would single to right to score Huggins to make it 3-1.

Huggins would double in the sixth with one out. Huggins would move to third on a passed ball and score later in the inning on another passed ball to make it 4-1. The Mustangs would score one in the seventh to close the scoring,

Tillman and Bradley would both record two hits while Martin, Cornell-Neal, Huggins and Kelly would record one hit. Cornell-Neal and Bradley would each record an RBI.

Senior right handed pitcher Joseph Mann (Bacolod, Philippines) would pick up the win throwing a complete game while allowing four hits and two runs and striking out five.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday, March 22nd at 12 and 2 pm as they wrap up their series against Central Baptist at Stars Park.
