Baseball Falls to Central Baptist in Doubleheader

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 13-3 in game one and 21-5 in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Stars Park against Central Baptist. With the losses, the Hornets fall to 5-21 on the season and 3-17 in American Midwest Conference play while the Mustangs improve to 18-13 on the season and 15-5 in AMC play.

In game one, the Mustangs scored three runs in the first, six in the second and one in the third to hold a 10-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.

In the bottom of the third senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) singled with two outs. Senior outfielder Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) would hit a home run to center to cut the Mustangs lead to 10-2.

The Mustangs would score twice in the fifth. Freshman centerfielder Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) would single to start the inning. Martin would single and move Martinez to second. Martinez and Martin would steal second and third and Martinez would score on a throwing error. The Mustangs added one more in the sixth.

Martin would lead the way with two hits, while Tillman, Martinez, sophomore catcher Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.), freshman first baseman Miguel Navarro (Raytown, Mo.), freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) and sophomore first baseman Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.) would all record a hit. Tillman recorded two runs batted in. Martin and Martinez recorded a stolen base.

In game two, the Mustangs scored three runs in the second,six in the third and seven in the fourth to hold a 16-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Cornell-Neal walked to start the inning. Navarro singled to right. Matthews reached on an infield single to load the bases. Henderson singled down the third base line to score Cornell-Neal and Navarro. Martin singled to left to score Matthews to make it 16-3. Martinez singled to center to load the bases. Tillman singled home Martin and Henderson. The Mustangs scored five in the sixth.

Martin, Martinez, and Matthews all recorded two hits. Tillman, Navarro, Henderson, and senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) all recorded a hit. Tillman and Henderson recorded two RBI's while Martin added one. Martinez recorded a stolen base.

The Hornets return to action next Friday, March 28th against Hannibal-LaGrange at 12 and 2 pm at Stars Park.
