Hornets Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Hannibal-LaGrange

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 10-7 in game one and won 8-4 in game two of the doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange on Friday afternoon at Stars Park. With the split, the Hornets are now 6-22 on the season and 4-18 in American Midwest Conference play while the Trojans are 5-19 on the season and 4-18 in AMC play.

In game one, senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) doubled to start the home half of the first. Martin advanced on a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) singled to right. Junior utility player Sam Britton (St. Louis, Mo.) would run for Cornell-Neal and proceed to steal second. Senior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) doubled to left to score Martin and Britton to make it 2-0 Hornets. Senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) would hit a two run homer to center to score Mann to make it 4-0 Hornets after one.

The Trojans would score two in the second. Martin would walk with one out in the second. Senior outfielder Za'Maree Tillman would double to left and Martin would go ti third. Cornell-Neal grounded out to score Martin to push the Hornets lead to 5-2.

The Trojans would score four in the second and third to take a 10-5 lead. In the sixth, Tillman walked to start the inning then moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a flyout. Mann singled to center to score Tillman to cut the Trojans lead to 10-6. In the seventh, senior third baseman Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would homer to make it 10-7.

Mann would lead the way with three hits while Martin added two, Tillman, Cornell-Neal, Kelly, Gutierrez, senior first baseman Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.), sophomore first baseman Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.), freshman centerfielder Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) and freshman middle infielder Khalil Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) all recorded a hit. Mann led the way with three runs batted in while Kelly added two, Cornell-Neal and Gutierrez added one.

In game two, Martin walked to start the Hornets half of the first. Martinez would reach on a walk. Martin and Martinez would move up a base on a wild pitch. Martin would score on a passed ball. Tillman would score Martinez on a ground out to make it 2-0 Hornets after one.

The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Smith would triple to left center. Martin singled home Smith. Martin stole second. Martinez walked. Tillman walked to load the bases. Mann would record a sacrifice fly to score Martin to make it 4-0. Tillman and Martinez would also move up a base on the sacrifice fly. Freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) recorded an RBI groundout to score Martinez. Kelly walked to put runners on the corners. Gutierrez singled to center to score Tillman to make it 6-0. Henderson singled to right to score Kelly to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead after five.

The Trojans would score three in the sixth. Mann would hit a home run to make it 8-3 going to the seventh. The Trojans scored one in the seventh.

Mann would lead the way with two hits while Martin, Martinez, Matthews, Gutierrez, Henderson and Smith all added one. Mann recorded two RBI's while Martin, Tillman, Matthews, Gutierrez and Henderson all had one. On the day, Mann would go 5-5 with three singles, a double, a home run, a hit by pitch, a walk, a sacrifice fly, five RBI's and two runs scored.

Junior right handed pitcher Dakota Gaines (Jay, Okla.) would toss a complete game to pick up his second win of the season. Gaines would also strike out nine Trojans in the win.

The Hornets will conclude their series with the Trojans on Saturday, March 29th at Stars Park with first pitch for game one scheduled for 11 am.
