ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 11-3 in game one and 13-9 in game two of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Stars Park against William Woods. With the losses, the Hornets fall to 3-12 on the season and 1-9 in American Midwest Conference play while the Owls improve to 13-9 on the season and 7-5 in AMC play.
In game one, the Owls scored two in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to hold an 11-0 lead.
Freshman catcher
Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) would single to start the sixth. Senior shortstop
Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) would double down the left field line to score Matthews from first. Sophomore catcher
Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) would single to center scoring Martin to cut the Owls lead to 11-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, junior middle infielder
Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) would walk to start the inning. After advancing on a passed ball freshman outfielder
Yabnel Mojica (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) would double home Khatkar to make it 11-3.
Martin would lead the way with three hits, while Cornell-Neal and senior first basemanÂ
Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) would record two hits each and Matthews, Mojica and senior outfielder
Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) would all record a hit.
In game two, the Owls would score three in the first. Martin would reach on an error and move to third on a double by Cornell-Neal. Martin would score on a wild pitch to cut the Owls lead to 3-1. The Owls would score five in the third and one in the fifth to hold a 9-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth.
Matthews singled to start the fifth. Cornell-Neal singled to center. Mann singled to left to score sophomore shortstop
Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) as Bradley ran for the catcher Matthews. Huggins would double down the right field line to score Cornell-Neal and Mann to make it 9-4 Owls. Senior outfielder
Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) doubled home Huggins to cut it to 9-5. Senior third baseman
Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) walked.
Kelly and Gutierrez both advanced on a wild pitch. Mojica doubled home Kelly and Gutierrez to cut the Owls lead to 9-7. Martin would single. Matthews would single to second to score Mojica and a throwing error would allow Martin to score from first to tie the game at 9-9. The Hornets scored eight runs on nine hits in the fifth.
The Owls would score four in the seventh to pick up the 13-9 win.
Cornell-Neal recorded four hits, while Matthews and Huggins each had two and Martin, Mann, Kelly and Mojica had one. Huggins and Mojica each had two runs batted in while Matthews, Mann and Kelly had one RBI each.
The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, March 11th against Columbia at Stars Park with game one beginning at 12 pm. The doubleheader against Columbia are make-up games from February 24th.
