ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 15-8 in game one and 9-6 in game two of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Stars Park against Mission. With the losses, the Hornets fall to 6-32 on the season and 4-28 in American Midwest Conference play while the Patriots improve to 28-16 on the season and 21-11 in AMC play.
In game one, the Patriots scored 11 runs in the first and three in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior first baseman
Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) singled. Senior outfielder
Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) followed Huggins with a single. Senior third baseman
Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) walked to load the bases. A two-out single by sophomore second baseman
Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) scored Huggins.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior outfielder
Za'Maree Tillman (Bakersfield, Calif.) walked to start the inning. Senior outfielder
Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit. Mo.) hit a two-run homerun to make it 14-3 Patriots.
In the bottom of the sixth, Gutierrez would walk. Bradley would reach with a one-out walk. Senior shortstop
Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) singled to left scoring Gutierrez to make it 14-4. Tillman singled to third as Bradley would score. Martin stole third and Tillman stole second and a throwing error allowed Martin to score and Tillman to third. Freshman catcher
Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) walked and freshman middle infielder
Khalil Smith (Memphis, Tenn.) would run for Matthews. Mann would single home Tillman to make it 14-7. Huggins would walk to load the bases. Kelly would record a sacrifice fly to score Smith to make it 14-8.
Mission would add a run in the seventh.
Mann would lead the way with three hits while Martin and Tillman added two hits each and Matthews, Huggins, Kelly and Bradley added one hit each.
In game two, Martin singled to start the bottom of the first and then stole second. Mann would single to score Martin to make it 1-0.
The Patriots would score three in the top of the second. Smith would lead off the second with a single. After a fielders choice and error junior utility player
Sam Britton (St. Louis, Mo.) was on first and Smith on second. A two-out walk to sophomore catcher
Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) loaded the bases. Freshman centerfielder
Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) would run for Cornell-Neal. Mann would double down the rightfield line to clear the bases and put the Hornets back on top. Huggins would double home Mann to make it 5-3.
The Patriots would cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the third. Tillman started the fourth with a single to center. Mann singled to right and Tillman would make it to third. Huggins would double down the leftfield line to score Tillman and make it 6-4 Hornets.
The Patriots scored one in the fifth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Mann would lead the way with three hits while Huggins added two and Martin, Tillman, Cornell-Neal and Smith all added a hit.
Friday's doubleheader was senior day. Before the games, six seniors were recognized and they include Martin, Mann, Gutierrez, Huggins, Kelly and Tillman.
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, April 23rd at 12 and 2 pm at Crowley's Ridge in Paragould, Ark.
