ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball start the season 1-1 after beating Wilberforce in three sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) and falling to #19 Missouri Baptist (14-25, 17-25, 12-25) on Saturday at the Emerson Performance Center.
In the first match against Wilberforce, the Lady Hornets started out 9-3 in the first set that saw junior middle blocker and right side hitter
Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) recording two kills along with junior outside hitter
Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) recording two kills. The Bulldogs would cut the Lady Hornets lead to 12-9 and force a timeout. McReynolds would record a kill after the timeout to push the lead to 13-9. Sophomore outside hitter
Serenity Baker (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) and sophomore middle hitter
Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) would record a block to make it 16-10 Lady Hornets. A kill from McReynolds made it 20-12. Edison and McReynolds would record a kill for the 24th and 25th points and give the Lady Hornets a one set to none advantage.
In set two, the Lady Hornets would start out with a 2-0 lead after a serve ace from junior setter
Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson). Williams would cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-3 after a kill. Edison and McReynolds recorded a kill on back-to-back points to the set two at five. The Lady Hornets would take four of the next seven points to take a 9-8 lead. A Baker kill, an attack error by the Bulldogs and an ace by Smith put the Lady Hornets up 12-10. Edison would record kills on back-to-back points to make it 18-12 Harris-Stowe. The Lady Hornets would take set two 25-20.
In set three, the Lady Hornets would lead 4-3 before the Bulldogs regained the lead at 5-4. An 8-0 run by the Lady Hornets would see them go from down 10 -8 to up 16-10. During the run, McReynolds recorded two more kills and junior outside hitter and defensive specialist
Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) recorded a serve ace. The final 18 points in set three would be split nine aside and saw the Lady Hornets take set three 25-19 and take the match in three sets.
McReynolds recorded a game-high 14 kills, Smith recorded 14 assists and three serve aces, Foster recorded a game-high 12 digs, Williams recorded four blocks.
In the second match against the Spartans, the Spartans raced out to a 6-2 lead before back-to-back errors by the Spartans made it 6-4. Foster recorded an ace to cut the Spartans lead to 9-8. A 5-0 Spartans run pushed their lead to 14-8. A kill by McReynolds trimmed the deficit to 18-11. The Spartans would take seven of the final nine points to close out set one 25-14.

Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City) would tie set two at four. The Spartans would score nine of the next 11 to take a 13-6 lead in the set. A kill from Williams made it 14-8 in favor of the Spartans. McReynolds cut the deficit to 18-11 with her kill. Foster cut it to 19-13 after recording a kill. The Spartans would take set two 25-17.
A kill by Edison gave the Lady Hornets an early 2-1 lead in set three. Williams cut the deficit to 4-3 with a kill. A 10-1 run by the Spartans would push their lead to 14-4. Three errors by the Spartans cut their lead to 14-7. The Spartans would score 11 of the last 16 points to take the match.
Foster recorded 14 digs in the match. Smith recorded 10 assists. Anderson recorded three blocks.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Friday, August 29th at 12 pm against Philander Smith and at 2 pm against Langston at the Philander Smith Classic.
