LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in four sets (22-25, 25-23, 17-25, 23-25) to Philander Smith and fell to Langston in three sets (16-25, 15-25, 18-25) on Friday afternoon at the Panther Classic hosted by Philander Smith. With the two losses, the Lady Hornets fall to 1-3 on the season.
Philander Smith Match:
Sophomore middle hitter
Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) would give the Lady Hornets an early 2-1 lead in set one. Freshman right side hitter
Jalia Sanders would record a solo block to tie set one at six. The Panthers would turn an 8-7 deficit into a 13-9 lead. A kill by senior outside hitter
A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock) and a block by Williams and junior middle blocker and right side
Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) would cut the deficit to 13-12. The Lady Hornets would score four of the next six points to take a 16-15 lead. The Panthers scored the final four points to win set one 25-22.
In set two, Williams would record two kills while Watson and Edison added one each to give the Lady Hornets a 4-1 lead. Sophomore middle hitter
Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City) would record a kill and junior outside hitter
Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) would record back-to-back serve aces to make it 8-5 Lady Hornets. A 6-3 Panthers run would have set two tied at 11. The Panthers would take a 17-12 lead. A block by Edison and Williams and kills by Anderson and McReynolds cut the deficit to 17-15. A kill by junior defensive specialist
Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) an ace by McReynolds and an attack error by the Panthers tied set two at 20. Sanders and Williams made it 24-22 Lady Hornets with their kills. Williams would close set two with her kill.
In set three, a kill from Watson and a solo block and a kill by Anderson had the Lady Hornets up 6-5. A kill by McReynolds tied set three at 10. The Panthers would score seven of the next nine to go up 17-12. A kill by McReynolds cut the deficit to 19-14. After back-to-back errors by the Panthers the deficit was 20-16. The Panthers scored five of the last six points to take set three.
A kill from Williams and from sophomore outside hitter
Serenity Baker (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) put the Lady Hornets up 3-1 in set four. An 8-2 run by the Panthers put them ahead 9-5. A kill by McReynolds, Williams and Sanders as well as an attack error by the Panthers tied set four at 10. Another 8-2 run by the Panthers put them up 18-12. A kill by Williams, a block by Baker and Anderson and a block by McReynolds and Anderson cut the deficit to 18-15. Two kills by McReynolds and a kill from Anderson cut it to 20-18 Panthers and force a timeout by the Panthers. Out of the timeout an attack error, an ace and a kill from McReynolds put the Lady Hornets up 21-20. The Panthers scored five of the last seven points to win set four and the match.
McReynolds led the way with 13 kills, while junior setter
Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) recorded 21 assists, senior setter
Brianah Dawson (Dallas, Texas/South Oak Cliff/Wells College) added 15 assists, Foster recorded 18 digs while Smith added 14 and Kemp added 10. Williams recorded four total blocks.
Langston Match:
Kills from Williams and three from McReynolds had the Lady Hornets up 4-2 in set one. The Lions would tie set one at five with a 3-0 run. The Lions would go on an 8-5 run to take a 13-10 lead. A block by Watson and Williams and a kill from Kemp cut the deficit to 13-12. A 5-0 run by the Lions extended their lead to 18-12. The Lions would score seven of the last 11 to take set one 25-16.
A McReynolds kill tied set two at three. A serve ace by McReynolds put the Lady Hornets up 5-4. A 4-0 run by the Lions put them up 8-5. Sanders cut the deficit to 9-7. An 8-1 run by the Lions pushed their lead to 17-8. A block by Anderson and Edison cut the deficit to 17-10. The Lions scored eight of the last 13 points to take set two 25-15.
An ace from Kemp put Harris-Stowe up 3-0 in set three. The Lions would score the next four points in the set. A kill and an ace by McReynolds and a kill by Anderson made it 8-6 Lady Hornets. A 5-0 run by the Lions out them up 11-8. The next eight points were split four aside that left the Lady Hornets down 15-12. A kill from Sanders cut the deficit to 20-15. Williams cut the deficit to 24-18 before the Lions closed out the set and match.
McReynolds led the way with seven kills, Smith recorded nine assists, Foster and Dawson recorded seven digs each.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, August 30th for the second day of the Panther Classic. The Lady Hornets will play the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) at 10 am and Jarvis Christian at 2 pm.
