Women's Volleyball Beats Jarvis Christian, Falls to USAO

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in four sets (12-25, 25-13, 11-25, 20-25) to the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) and swept Jarvis Christian (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) to split the second day of the Panther Classic hosted by Philander Smith. With the split, the Lady Hornets are now 2-4 on the season.

USAO Match:
The Drovers raced out to a 4-0 lead in set one before junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) got the Lady Hornets on the board with a kill. Sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) recorded a kill to cut the deficit to 6-2. A 5-1 run by the Drovers pushed their lead to 11-3. A kill from senior outside hitter A'nyla Watson (Little Rock, Ark./North Little Rock) and a service ace from junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) cut the deficit to 13-6. Williams cut the deficit to 15-7 with a kill. Five of the next six points went in favor of the Drovers to push their lead to 20-8. The Lady Hornets would go on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 20-11 before the Drovers won the set 25-12.

In set two, a kill from William put the Lady Hornets up 3-2. A 4-0 run by the Lady Hornets put them up 7-5. A block by freshman right side Jalia Sanders and sophomore middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City), a kill from Sanders and two kills from McReynolds pushed the lead to 12-6. A 7-0 Lady Hornets run pushed their lead to 19-7. A kill by Watson pushed the lead to 21-10. The Lady Hornets went on to win set two 25-13.

In set three, a kill from McReynolds, an ace from freshman defensive specialist Mya Hendrix and a kill by junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) gave the Lady Hornets a 4-3 lead. A 9-2 run by the Drovers gave them a 12-6 lead. A 7-2 run extended the Drovers lead to 19-8. Williams cut the lead to 19-9 with a kill. The Drovers scored six of the final eight points to win set three 25-11.

In set four, Williams and Watson recorded a block to tie the set at one. A kill from McReynolds cut the lead to 4-2. A kill by Anderson cut the deficit to 8-4. An ace by Foster cut the deficit to 10-6. An ace from Hendrix cut the Drovers lead to 13-12. A 6-1 run by the Drovers pushed their lead to 19-13. A kill from Anderson cut the deficit to 19-16. A kill by freshman outside hitter Renise Powell cut the deficit to 23-19. A kill from Williams cut the deficit to 24-20, but the Drovers would close out the set and match on the next rally.

McReynolds lead the way with 10 kills, junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) recorded 12 assists, Hendrix recorded four service aces, Foster recorded 11 digs, and Anderson recorded three total blocks.

Jarvis Christian Match:
In set one, the Bulldogs raced out to a 4-0 lead. A kill from Watson cut the deficit to 4-1. Edison's kill cut it to 7-3. A kill from Watson and an ace from defensive specialist Alexis Kemp (Kansas City, Mo./University Academy) cut the deficit to 14-10. Back-to-back kills from McReynolds cut the lead to 16-13 Bulldogs. A kill and ace from McReynolds, a kill from Anderson and Sanders tied the set at 17. A kill from Anderson and from Sanders put the Lady Hornets up 19-18. An ace from Foster and an attack error by the Bulldogs pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 21-18. A kill from Watson and a block by Edison and Williams would give set one to the Lady Hornets.

A kill from Kemp cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-2 early in set two. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 5-3. A kill and a solo block by Williams, an ace by Smith, an attack error by the Bulldogs, another ace by Smith, another attack error by the Bulldogs gave the Lady Hornets a 12-8 lead and forced a Bulldogs timeout. Smith recorded her third ace after the timeout to push the lead to 13-8. A kill by Edison pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 17-11. A kill by Anderson extended the lead to 21-17. Smith closed out the second set with her fourth ace of the set and gave the Lady Hornets a 2-0 lead in the match.

In set three, back-to-back kills from McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 4-3 lead. A 6-2 Bulldogs run gave them a 9-6 lead. A kill from Williams, an attack error by the Bulldogs, a block by Edison and Williams and a solo block by Williams cut the deficit to 15-12. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 19-15. A kill by Edison and Powell, an attack error by the Bulldogs and a service ace by junior defensive specialist Jennifer Garcia (Euless, Texas/Euless Trinity) cut the deficit to 20-19. A kill by Sanders, a McReynolds ace and back-to-back attack errors by the Bulldogs gave the Lady Hornets a 23-21 lead. Foster ended the match with a service ace to give the Lady Hornets a sweep.

McReynolds led the way with nine kills, Smith recorded 13 assists and four of the Lady Hornets 10 service aces, Foster recorded 12 digs, and Williams recorded four total blocks.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, September 6th at 12 pm at Principia College in Elsah, Ill.
