Lady Hornets Volleyball Moves to 2-0 in AMC Play with Sweep at Central Baptist

CONWAY, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball picked up a three set sweep (28-26, 25-18, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at Central Baptist. With the win, the Lady Hornets are 4-5 on the season and 2-0 in American Midwest Conference play while the Mustangs fall to 1-8 on the season and 0-1 in AMC play.

All four wins this season for the Lady Hornets have come via the sweep.

In set one, the Mustangs would take an early 3-0 lead. After back-to-back attack errors and a kill by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) cut the deficit to 4-3. A kill by McReynolds and a service ace by senior defensive specialist Makayla Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas/Lawton) tied the set at five. A kill by junior middle hitter Saniah Files (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West), a kill by senior setter Brianah Dawson (Dallas, Texas/South Oak Cliff High School/Wells College) and an attack error by the Mustangs gave the Lady Hornets an 8-6 lead. A kill by McReynolds tied the set at 10.

Kills from freshman outside hitter Renise Powell and junior right side hitter Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) made it 12-11 Lady Hornets. A service error and two attack errors by the Mustangs gave the Lady Hornets a 19-18 lead and forced a Mustangs timeout. After the timeout Edison and sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) recorded a block to make it 20-18. A  block by Files and McReynolds made it 24-21 Lady  Hornets. A 5-1 run by the Mustangs gave them a 25-25 lead. An attack error by the Mustangs, a kill by Powell and another attack error gave the Lady Hornets a 28-26 set one win.

In set two, a service error by the Mustangs, a kill by McReynolds, a solo block by Williams, an attack error and bad set by the Mustangs and a kill by McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 6-0 lead. A kill by Files pushed the lead to 8-4. A kill by McReynolds followed by a service ace from McReynolds and an attack error by the Mustangs pushed the lead to 11-5. A kill by Files, an attack error by the Mustangs, a service ace by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) and a kill by Williams pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 15-6. A block by Williams and Powell and then a block by Williams and Edison pushed the Lady Hornets lead to 19-8. A block by McReynolds and Files pushed the lead to 22-10. A kill by McReynolds and a kill by Powell pushed the lead to 24-17. A kill by Foster closed out set two 25-18 for the Lady Hornets.

A kill by Edison made it 2-0 early in set three. A 6-1 run by the Mustangs gave them a 6-3 lead. Kills by McReynolds and Edison cut the deficit to 6-5. A block by Files and Powell and a kill by Powell cut the deficit to 10-9. Kills from Files and McReynolds tied the set at 11. Back-to-back kills by Powell and a kill by Williams put the Lady Hornets up 14-13. A 4-0 run by the Mustangs put them ahead 17-14 and forced a Harris-Stowe timeout. After the timeout a kill by Powell and an attack error by the Mustangs cut the deficit to 17-16. A kill by McReynolds tied the set at 19. A kill by Files tied the set at 21. A block by Files and Powell and a kill by Files pushed the lead to 24-21. A kill from Files would give the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set three win and complete the sweep. 

McReynolds led the way with 14 kills, while Foster led the way with 14 digs, Dawson recorded 18 assists. Files recorded four block assists while Williams recorded one solo block and three block assists. Dawson, Hernandez, Foster and McReynolds all recorded a service ace. Powell recorded a career-high nine kills and freshman right side hitter Jalia Sanders recorded a career-high 12 assists.

The Lady Hornets return to action on Wednesday, September 17th at 7 pm at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill.
