Women's Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in a hard fought five set match (25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 15-25, 15-17) on Wednesday night at Blackburn. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 4-6 on the season while the Beavers improve to 4-6 on the season.

The Beavers would take a 3-0 lead early in set one. Kills by junior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic) and junior right side Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central) tied the set at three. An attack error by the Beavers, two kills by McReynolds, another attack error by the Beavers and a kill by Edison pushed the Lady Hornets ahead 8-4. A kill by junior middle hitter Saniah Files (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) made it 9-6. A kill by sophomore middle hitter Jehireh Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Althoff Catholic) tied the set at 12. A service ace by junior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) pushed the lead to 15-12. Two kills by McReynolds and a kill by Files pushed the lead to 20-19. A kill by freshman outside hitter Renise Powell and a kill by Williams gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set one win.

A kill by junior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) gave the Lady Hornets a 6-5 lead in set two. A kill by McReynolds pushed the lead to 8-5. A kill by Powell and a service ace by Smith made it 12-8. A kill by McReynolds pushed the lead to 16-11. Kills by Edison, Foster, McReynolds and Files extended the lead to 20-14. Williams would record a kill to close out set two 25-20.

A 4-0 run by the Lady Hornets gave them a 6-3 lead in set three. A 4-0 run by the Beavers put them up 7-6. Kills by Foster, Smith and Edison made it 12-11 Lady Hornets. Kills by McReynolds and Edison helped push the lead to 15-12. A 7-4 run by the Beavers had the set tied at 19. Kills from Files and Williams made it 23-22 Lady Hornets before a 3-0 run by the Beavers gave them a 25-23 set three win and forced a fourth set.

The Beavers raced out to a 4-0 lead in set four. A kill by Williams and a kill by Files cut the deficit to 5-4. A kill by Files tied the set at seven. A 6-2 run by the Beavers gave them a 14-10 lead. A kill by Edison cut the deficit to 15-12. A service ace by senior defensive specialist Makayla Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas/Lawton) cut the deficit to 17-15. The Beavers would close on an 8-0 run to take set four 25-15 and force a fifth set. 

A solo block by Files made it 3-1 Lady Hornets early in the fifth set. A kill by Williams made it 5-3. An attack error by the Beavers gave the Lady Hornets an 8-5 lead. A 4-1 run by the Beavers tied the set at nine. McReynolds made it 11-10 with a kill. The Beavers would comeback from down 14-12 and close on a 5-1 run to win 17-15 and win the match.

McReynolds and Files both recorded a career-high in kills. Foster and Hernandez recorded a career-high in digs. Freshman right side Jalia Sanders recorded a career-high in assists.

McReynolds led the way with 21 kills while Files added 12. Foster led the way with 26 digs while Hernandez added 23, McReynolds added a season-high 19. Five players recorded double-digits in digs. Smith led the way with 25 assists and Sander added 22. Files recorded three solo blocks. Smith recorded her third double-double of the season while McReynolds recorded her second double-double of the season.

The Lady Hornets recorded a season-high in kills (66), assists (60) and digs (108).

The Lady Hornets return to action on Friday, September 19th at 6 pm against Cottey College in American Midwest Conference play at Emerson Performance Center. The theme for Friday's match is white out.
