Early Goal Holds up for Hornets in 1-0 Win at Missouri Baptist

CREVE COEUR, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's soccer scores an early goal to pick up a 1-0 win on Wednesday night Missouri Baptist. With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-1-1 while the Spartans fall to 1-2 on the season. The win for the Hornets marked the first win at Missouri Baptist since 2008 when they won 2-1 on September 26th, 2008.

Senior forward Mario De La Fuente (Madrid, Spain/Mid America Christian University) would take a pass from sophomore defender Alexis Santillan (Cordoba, Argentina/Universidad Provincial de Cordoba) and bury the shot for his fourth goal of the season to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. In the 22nd minute, senior midfielder Matteo Rissato Prado (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Carl Sandburg College) would be turned away by the Spartans keeper.

Senior goalkeeper Matheus Pereira da Silva (Santo Andre, SP, Brazil/Columbia College) would keep the Hornets up with a save in the 43rd minute. The Hornets would carry a 1-0 lead into the half.

Pereira da Silva would make two saves in the matter of seconds to keep the Hornets lead. In the 61st minute the Hornets keep would make another save to keep the lead. Pereira da Silva would stay busy and make two more saves in the 68th minute and another in the 69th minute. 

Sophomore forward Samuel Guerrero (Santiago, Chile/South Kent School) would be denied by the Spartans keeper in the 78th minute. Pereira da Silva would make two more saves late in the game to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Hornets. 

The Spartans would hold a 13-9 advantage in shots, 9-3 in shots on goal and 7-1 in corner kicks. Pereira da Silva would make nine saves in goal as he and senior goalkeeper Kazuyuki Matsumoto (Sanda, Japan/St. Charles Community College) would get credit for the clean sheet.

The Hornets return to action on Sunday, September 7th at 3:30 pm against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods at Cardinal Ritter High School in St. Louis.
