ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball fell 67-35 on Saturday afternoon against Columbia College at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 2-9 on the season and 1-4 in American Midwest Conference play while the Cougars improve to 14-1 on the season and 5-0 in AMC play.
The Cougars raced out to a 9-0 lead after hitting threes on their first three possessions to open the game. Senior forward Marchi Hunter (Menifee, Calif./Vista del Lago) got the Lady Hornets on the board with a jumper. A jumper by senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) cut the deficit to 10-4. An old fashioned three point play by sophomore guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) and back-to-back layups by Jordan cut the Cougars lead to 12-11. A jumper by Jordan cut the deficit to 14-13. A jumper by Jordan cut the deficit to 16-15. A three by Montgomery tied the game at 18. The Cougars held a 19-18 lead after one quarter of play.
A jumper by senior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) gave the Lady Hornets a 20-19 lead. A 10-0 run by the Cougars gave them a 29-20 lead. A layup by Montgomery cut the Cougars lead to 29-22. A jumper by Dilosa cut the deficit to 31-24. Two free throws by Montgomery cut the deficit to 36-26. The Cougars scored the final three points in the quarter to take a 39-26 lead into halftime.
A jumper by Montgomery cut the deficit to 44-28. A three by Montgomery cut the Cougars lead to 50-31. The Cougars would have a 52-31 lead after three quarters of play.
A jumper by Montgomery would cut the deficit to 56-33. A jumper by junior forward Janiya Jones (Jackson, Tenn.) cut the deficit to 58-35. The Cougars scored the final nine points of the game to secure the win.
Montgomery led the way with 17 points while Jordan added 10. Hunter led the way with six rebounds. Montgomery, Hunter and sophomore guard Janiya Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Jennings) all recorded an assist. Jordan added a block. Sophomore forward Tyara Davis (Kansas City, Kan./Blue Valley North) recorded four steals.
The Lady Hornets went 15-63 (23.8%) from the field, 2-15 (13.3%) from three and 3-3 (100%) at the free throw line.Â
The Lady Hornets return to action on Thursday, January 15th at 5:30 pm against Williams Baptist University in AMC play at Emerson Performance Center. Â
