ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 91-87 on Thursday night against Williams Baptist University at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-13 on the season and 0-5 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eagles improve to 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in AMC play.
A layup by junior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) and two free throws by freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) gave the Hornets a 4-2 lead early in the first half. A layup by sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets a 7-6 lead. A layup by senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) cut the deficit to 13-10. Two free throws from Watson cut the Eagles lead to 15-12. A jumper from Stojanovic cut the deficit to 17-14. Back-to-back layups, a three and three free throws from Davis along with a layup from junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) turned a 19-14 deficit into a 26-19 lead. A layup by senior forward Benjamin Rumanyika (Buckeye, Ariz./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets a 28-23 lead.
A jumper from senior guard Kevin Jones (Sikeston, Mo./Dakota State University) gave the Hornets a 33-30 lead with 4:40 left in the first half. A three from Jones extended the lead to 36-32. The Hornets would score six of the final 11 points in the half to carry a 42-37 lead into the half.
A 7-2 Eagles run to start the second half had the game tied at 44. A layup by Lawson gave the Hornets a 46-44 lead. A thunderous dunk from Lawson gave the Hornets a 50-47 lead. A jumper from Stojanovic gave the Hornets a 54-50 lead. A layup by sophomore guard Jason Freeman (Atlanta, Ga./William Woods University) gave the Hornets a 57-54 lead. An old fashioned three point play from Jones extended the lead to 62-58. A jumper from Watson had the Hornets up 64-60. A three by Stojanovic had the Hornets up 67-64 with 12 minutes remaining in the game. A layup by Davis gave the Hornets a 69-68 lead. A layup by sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University) cut the deficit to 74-73 with 7:27 remaining.
A dunk from Stojanovic cut the Eagles lead to 78-77. Lawson would give the Hornets an 80-79 lead with a layup. A layup from Davis tied the game at 84 with 1:37 left in the game. The Eagles would close the game on a 7-3 run to win 91-87.
Davis led the way with 29 points, which tied a career-high, while Jones added 15, Lawson added 14 and Stojanovic added 11. Davis pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Lawson added five assists. Davis recorded four steals. Stojanovic added two blocks.
The Hornets went 31-69 (44.9%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from three and 22-43 (51.2%) at the free throw line. The 43 free throw attempts and 56 rebounds were season-highs for the Hornets. Davis's 18 free throw attempts were the most by a single Hornet in a game this season.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday, January 17th at 3 pm against Crowley's Ridge College in AMC play at Emerson Performance Center.
