Hornets Basketball's Second-Half Comeback Falls Short


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 84-82 to Crowley's Ridge College on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-14 on the season and 0-6 in American Midwest Conference play while the Pioneers improve to 9-10 on the season and 2-3 in AMC play.

 

A layup and an old fashioned three point play by sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets a 5-2 lead early in the first half. A layup by junior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) extended the lead to 7-2. A layup by Lawson tied the game at nine. A layup by Stojanovic cut the deficit to 12-11. A jumper by Stojanovic gave the Hornets a 13-12 lead. A three and a layup from junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) extended the lead to 18-12. A layup from Stojanovic extended the Hornets lead to 21-15 with 9:29 left in the first half. A 10-0 run by the Pioneers gave them a 25-21 lead. A layup and two free throws by freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) cut the Pioneers lead to 27-26.

 

A layup from Stojanovic cut the deficit to 40-31 with 2:10 left in the first half. A layup from senior guard Kevin Jones (Sikeston, Mo./Dakota State University) cut the deficit to 42-33. The Pioneers would hold a 44-33 lead at halftime.

 

A layup by Stojanovic cut the deficit to 50-35 early in the second half. A jumper by Davis cut the Pioneers lead to 52-38. A three by sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University) cut the deficit to 56-43. A jumper by Lawson cut the deficit to 63-45. A layup by Lawson cut the deficit to 65-47 with 10:29 left in the game. A jumper from senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) and a jumper from Cast cut the deficit to 65-51. The Hornets used a 11-0 run that saw a layup from Lawson, a layup from Watson, a three and two layups from Cast to cut the Pioneers lead to 67-62. An old fashioned three point play from Watson cut the Pioneers lead to 70-65 with 5:23 to play in the game.

 

A layup from Lawson cut the deficit to 73-67. A three from Cast cut the deficit to 75-71 with 1:50 left in the game. A layup from Lawson cut the Pioneers lead to 81-77 with 30 seconds left in the game. A three from Cast cut the deficit to 84-82 as the Hornets comeback fell just short.

 

Cast led the way with a game and season-high 22 points off the bench while Lawson added 20 and Stojanovic recorded a season-high 16 points. Stojanovic led the way with seven rebounds. Lawson dished out seven assists. Lawson, Watson and Davis all recorded a block. Trotter, Jones, Stojanovic and Lawson all recorded two steals.

 

The Hornets went 33-59 (55.9%) from the field, 5-16 (31.3%) from three and 11-21 (52.4%) at the free throw line. The 55.9% from the field was a season-high for the Hornets.

 

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, January 22nd at 7:30 pm at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in AMC play.
