Late Three Sinks Lady Hornets 65-63 Against Central Baptist


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball fell 65-63 on Saturday afternoon against Central Baptist College at Emerson Performance Center. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 4-12 on the season and 3-7 in American Midwest Conference play while the Mustangs improve to 7-11 on the season and 4-6 in AMC play.

 

Sophomore guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) gave the Lady Hornets an early 1-0 lead with a free throw. Senior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) made it 3-2 Lady Hornets with a jumper. A jumper from junior forward Janiya Jones (Jackson, Tenn.) put the Lady Hornets on top 5-4. A layup from Dilosa made it 7-6 Lady Hornets with 5:32 left to play in the first quarter. A jumper from senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central), a layup from senior Jayla Dixon and a layup from Montgomery gave the Lady Hornets a 13-8 lead. A three by Dilosa extended the lead to 17-13. The Lady Hornets would hold a 17-15 lead after the first quarter.

 

A free throw from Montgomery and a jumper from Dilosa extended the lead to 20-15 early in the second quarter. A layup from Jones extended the Lady Hornets lead to 22-19. A 9-0 run by the Mustangs gave them a 28-22 lead. Layups from Jones and Montgomery cut the deficit to 28-26 going into halftime. The Lady Hornets held the Mustangs scoreless the final 4:53 of the half.

 

A jumper from Montgomery tied the game at 28 early in the third quarter. A layup from Jordan tied the game at 30. Two free throws from Montgomery gave the Lady Hornets a 32-30 lead. Back-to-back layups from Jordan gave the Lady Hornets a 36-33 lead with 5:59 to play in the third quarter. A quick 4-0 run by the Mustangs gave them a 37-36 lead. A layup from sophomore forward Tyara Davis (Kansas City, Kan./Blue Valley North) gave the Lady Hornets a 39-37 lead. The Mustangs closed the third quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 48-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

 

A layup from Montgomery cut the deficit to 48-41 early in the fourth. Back-to-back layups from Dilosa and a layup from Dixon cut the Mustangs lead to 50-45. A jumper from Jones cut the deficit to 52-49. Two free throws from Dilosa cut the deficit to 56-51. A jumper from Montgomery and a jumper from Dilosa cut the Mustangs lead to 58-55 with 4:11 remaining in the game. A jumper from Montgomery and a layup from Jordan cut the deficit to 60-59. A jumper from Jordan gave the Lady Hornets a 63-62 lead with 26 seconds left in the game. A buzzer beating three from the Mustangs gave them the 65-63 win.

 

Dilosa led the way with 17 points while Montgomery added 16 and Jordan added 14. Jordan recorded 11 rebounds including four offensive rebounds en route to recording her second double-double of the season. Montgomery recorded four assists. Jordan recorded two blocks and three steals.

 

The Lady Hornets went 27-68 (39.7%) from the field, 1-7 (14.3%) from three and 8-14 (57.1%) at the free throw line. 

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, February 3rd at 5:30 pm at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.
