Lady Hornets Basketball Falls on Road to Stephens


COLUMBIA, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's basketball fell 73-57 on Tuesday night at Stephens. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 4-13 on the season and 3-8 in American Midwest Conference play while the Stars improve to 9-12 on the season and 8-3 in AMC play.

 

The Stars started the game with a 4-0 run. Senior forward J'Lessa Jordan (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) cut the deficit in half with a jumper. A 6-0 Stars run extended their lead to 10-2. A free throw from senior guard Cailynn Dilosa (Gary, Ind./Merriville) cut the deficit to 10-3. A jumper from junior forward Janiya Jones (Jackson, Tenn.) cut the Stars lead to 12-5. A jumper from Jones cut the deficit to 15-7. A layup from Jordan cut the Stars lead to 17-9. A jumper from senior forward Marchi Hunter (Menifee, Calif./Vista del Lago) and two free throws from sophomore guard Alivia Montgomery (Little Rock, Ark./Little Rock Central) cut the Stars lead to 21-13. The Stars led 23-13 after one quarter of play.

 

A jumper from Jones cut the deficit to 25-15 early in the second quarter. A free throw from sophomore forward Armani Bingham (St. Louis, Mo./Clyde C. Miller) cut the Stars lead to 27-16. A free throw from Montgomery and a jumper from Jordan cut the deficit to 29-19 with 4:50 left in the first half. A three from Montgomery cut the deficit to 33-22. A jumper from Jones trimmed the Stars lead to 35-24. A jumper from Montgomery cut the Stars lead to 37-26 going into halftime.

 

A jumper from Jordan, a jumper from Dilosa, a jumper and free throw from Jones, a jumper from Montgomery, two free throws from Jones and a free throw from Dilosa was part of a 12-0 run over a 6:14 span in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 39-38. Two free throws from sophomore forward Tyara Davis (Kansas City, Kan./Blue Valley North) cut the deficit to 43-40. The Stars closed the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 49-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

 

A layup from Jordan cut the Stars lead to 49-42 early in the fourth quarter. A jumper from Jones cut the deficit to 51-44. An 8-0 run from the Stars extended their lead to 59-44. An old-fashioned three point play from Davis cut the Stars lead to 59-47. Back-to-back jumpers from Dilosa cut the deficit to 64-51 with 3:51 to play. A jumper from Hunter and a jumper from Dilosa cut the deficit to 71-55. A layup from Montgomery would conclude the scoring and cut the Stars lead to 73-57.

 

 Jones led the way with a season-high 15 points, while Montgomery added 12 and Dilosa and Jordan had 10 apiece. Davis and Jones recorded nine rebounds apiece. Five of the rebounds from Jones were on the offensive end. Jordan recorded three assists. Jordan added two blocks.

 

The Lady Hornets went 22-57 (38.6%) from the field, 1-7 (14.3%) from three and 12-17 (70.6%) at the free throw line. 

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Thursday, February 5th at Emerson Performance Center against Mission in AMC play. Thursday's theme for both the men's and women's game is Black Out/Greek Night.
