Hornets Basketball Falls at Mission

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 98-88 on Thursday night at Mission University. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-11 on the season and 0-3 in American Midwest Conference play while the Patriots improve to 7-9 on the season and 3-0 in AMC play. 

Senior center Greg Wilson (Kansas City, Kan./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets an early 2-0 lead. The Patriots would go on a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. Back-to-back layups by freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) gave the Hornets a 6-5 lead. A 9-0 run by the Patriots gave them a 14-6 lead. A layup by junior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University), a layup by sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University), two free throws by Davis, two free throws by senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) and a three by junior guard Shamar Carter (Inglewood, Calif./Moberly CC) was the scoring for the Hornets during an 11-0 run to take a 17-14 lead. A jumper by Stojanovic tied the game at 19. A layup by sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets a 21-19 lead. A layup by Stojanovic tied the game at 24 with 9:30 left in the first half. A three by freshman guard Christian Dake (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North High School) gave the Hornets a 27-26 lead. A layup by Davis tied the game at 30. 

Two free throws by Wilson tied the game at 32. A dunk by Davis and a layup by Wilson gave the Hornets at 37-34 lead with 5:34 left in the first half. A layup by Davis gave the Hornets a 39-38 lead. The Patriots would use a 10-0 run to take a 48-39 lead. A layup by Stojanovic cut the deficit to 48-41. A jumper by senior forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) cut the deficit to 52-47 going into halftime.

The Patriots opened the second half with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 59-47. A layup by Wilson cut the deficit to 59-49. A layup by junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) cut the deficit to 61-52. A layup by Wilson cut the Patriots lead to 63-54. A layup, two free throws and another layup by Wilson and a layup by Davis cut the Patriots lead to 69-64. A layup by Davis cut the deficit to 71-66. A layup and two free throws by Carter cut the deficit to 73-70 with 10:07 left to play. An old-fashioned three point play by Lawson cut the deficit to 79-73. A jumper by Lawson cut the Patriots lead to 85-75. A layup by Wilson cut the deficit to 88-79. A layup by Lawson and two free throws by Davis cut the deficit to 88-83 with just under four minutes to play. A dunk by Lawson and a three by Carter cut the deficit to 97-88 before the Patriots won 98-88.

Five players scored in double figures led by Davis with 21, Wilson with 18, Lawson with 15, Carter and Stojanovic with 10. Carter and Stojanovic both added seven rebounds. Carter had four assists. Watson and Stojanovic had a block. Lampley recorded three steals.

The Hornets went 32-70 (45.7%) from the field, 3-17 (17.6%) from three and 21-29 (72.4%) from the free throw line.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday, January 10th at 3 pm against Columbia College in AMC play at Emerson Performance Center.
