Hornets Basketball Falls in Hard Fought Game at Crowley's Ridge


PARAGOULD, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball fell 89-83 on Saturday afternoon at Crowley's Ridge. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-20 on the season and 1-12 in American Midwest Conference play while the Pioneers improve to 11-15 on the season and 4-8 in AMC play.

 

Sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) would tie the game at two with a layup. Senior forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College) tied the game at four with a jumper. A layup from Lawson, a layup from sophomore guard Jason Freeman (Atlanta, Ga./William Woods University) and a layup by junior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) gave the Hornets a 10-9 lead. A layup from Stojanovic gave the Hornets a 12-11 lead. A layup from Lawson tied the game at 14. An old-fashioned three point play from Watson, a layup from Lawson and a layup from freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) gave the Hornets a 21-19 lead with 9:25 to play in the first half. 

 

A jumper from Watson, a layup from Davis and from Stojanovic gave the Hornets a 27-21 lead. A jumper from freshman guard Christian Dake (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North High School) gave the Hornets a 35-31 lead. A 7-0 Pioneers run gave them a 38-35 lead. Two free throws from Stojanovic, a layup from sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist University) and a layup from Davis gave the Hornets a 41-38 lead before the Pioneers tied the game at 41 going into halftime.

 

Two free throws from Stojanovic would give the Hornets a 43-41 lead early in the second half. A jumper from Watson tied the game at 45. A layup from Stojanovic cut the deficit to 50-47. Two free throws from Watson and a layup from Lawson cut the deficit to 52-51. A layup from Stojanovic and two free throws from Lawson cut the deficit to 56-55 with 14:31 to play. A 9-3 Pioneers run extended their lead to 65-58. A three from junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) cut the deficit to 67-63. Four made free throws from Stojanovic cut the deficit to 71-70. Two free throws from Watson and a layup from Stojanovic gave the Hornets a 74-73 lead with 5:50 to play. Two free throws from senior guard Kevin Jones (Sikeston, Mo./Dakota State University) cut the deficit to 77-76. A three from Jones put the Hornets up 79-78. A layup from Stojanovic gave the Hornets an 81-79 lead. The Pioneers closed the game on a 10-2 run.

 

Stojanovic led the way with a game and career-high 24 points while Davis added 16, Watson added 13 and Lawson added 12. Davis recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Lawson recorded five assists. Trotter recorded three steals. Davis recorded one block.

 

The Hornets went 31-73 (42.5%) from the field, 2-10 (20.0%) from three and 19-23 (82.6%) from the free throw line. 

 

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, February 19th at 7:30 pm at Emerson Performance Center for senior night against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in AMC play.
