Hornets Basketball Picks Up 93-80 Senior Night Win Over UHSP


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University men's basketball picked up a 93-80 on Thursday night at Emerson Performance Center against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on senior night. With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-20 on the season and 2-12 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eutectics fall to 5-21 on the season and 2-11 in AMC play. 

Before the game four seniors were honored. The seniors were forward Jalen Watson (East St. Louis, Ill./St. Louis Community College), guard Kevin Jones (Sikeston, Mo./Dakota State University), forward Ty Lampley (Belleville, Ill./Rend Lake Community College) and manager Jamaiyah Amerison.

 

A three from Jones tied the game at three. Two free throws from freshman forward Nashawn Davis (St. Louis, Mo./Columbia College) tied the game at five. A layup and a dunk from sophomore guard Umar Lawson (Sumter, S.C./Voorhees University) gave the Hornets a 9-5 lead. A jumper from junior center Dimitrije Stojanovic (Nis, Serbia/Bethel University) extended the lead to 11-7. A dunk from Davis extended the lead to 13-9. A jumper from Davis gave the Hornets a 17-15 lead. A jumper from sophomore guard Antonio Trotter (Nashville, Tenn./Williams Baptist) cut the deficit to 20-19. Trotter would start a 23-0 run by the Hornets over a 6:24 span. During the run Trotter would make four consecutive threes, which was 14 consecutive points scored by Trotter, a three from Davis, a dunk from Lawson, two free throws from Davis, a layup from Stojanovic and a layup from Davis turned a 25-19 deficit into a 42-25 lead. A layup from Lawson extended the lead to 46-27 before the Hornets held a 46-29 lead at halftime.

 

A jumper and a layup from Stojanovic, a layup and dunk from Lawson helped extend the Hornets lead to 55-31 early in the second half. A layup from Lawson pushed the lead to 57-33. A layup from senior forward Benjamin Rumanyika (Buckeye, Ariz./Voorhees University) extended the lead to 59-38. A jumper from Jones extended the lead to 61-45. A three from junior guard Adolphus Cast (Detroit, Mich./Schoolcraft College) extended the Hornets lead to 64-52 with 9:57 to play. A 8-2 run by Davis extended the lead to 72-54. Layups from Stojanovic and Lawson extended the lead to 76-57. A jumper from Trotter extended the lead to 20 at 78-58. Two free throws from Jones extended the lead to 86-68. Two free throws from Trotter extended the lead to 88-70. An old-fashioned three point play from Watson extended the lead to 91-72 before the Hornets closed out the game with a 93-80 win.

 

Davis led the way with 23 points while Lawson added 21, Trotter added a career-high 21 and Stojanovic added 13. Jones and Stojanovic added nine rebounds apiece. Davis would record five assists and three steals. Stojanovic added two blocks.

 

The Hornets went 35-71 (49.3%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three and 16-27 (59.3%) from the free throw line. 

 

The Hornets return to action on Thursday, February 26th in the quarterfinals of the AMC Tournament with the opponent and time to be determined.
