JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball won 7-4 in game one and fell 11-1 in game two against Lincoln University on Wednesday afternoon in Jefferson City. With the split the Hornets are 1-11 on the season while the Blue Tigers are 6-16 on the season with the split.
Game 1:
A one out walk to senior first baseman Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peters, Mo.) and back-to-back two out walks to junior catcher Ian Funk (Wildwood, Mo.) and senior second baseman Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) had the Hornets in business in the top of the second. Junior left fielder Alex Fernandez (Caracas, Venezuela) singled to left field to score Schwerdt and Funk. Junior shortstop Felix Daclan (Modesto, Calif.) singled to load the bases. Junior first baseman Brayden Hatley (St. Louis, Mo.) singled to center field to score Khatkar and Fernandez to make it 4-0 Hornets.
The Blue Tigers scored one in the bottom of the third. Funk singled with one out in the top of the fourth. Khatkar and Fernandez would follow up with singles to load the bases. Daclan would hit a sacrifice fly to score Funk to make it 5-1. The Blue Tigers would score three in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Hornets lead to 5-4 after five innings.
Fernandez would walk with one out in the sixth. Daclan doubled down the left field line to score Fernandez from first. Hatley singled to left to score Daclan to make it 7-4.
Junior pitcher Hayden Waters would go five innings in his first career collegiate start to get the win while senior right handed pitcher Joseph Mann (Bacolod, Philippines) would record a six-out save to help the Hornets secure their first win of the season.
Fernandez, Daclan, Hatley all had two hits while Funk, Khatkar, senior right fielder Tashaun Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind.) and junior third baseman Andrew Kobe (St. Louis, Mo.) all had one hit. Hatley recorded three runs batted in while Daclan and Fernandez had two runs batted in.
Game 2:
The Blue Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Khatkar walked to start the third. With two outs Waters singled to right field to score freshman infielder Riquendri Morel, who ran for Khatkar, to tie the score at one.
The Blue Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to pick up the 11-1 win.
Waters, Coleman and Morel all recorded one hit. Waters had one run batted in.
The Hornets return to action on Friday, March 20th at 1 and 3:30 pm at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo.
