Hornets Baseball Falls in Series Finale at Columbia


COLUMBIA, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 18-6 on Saturday afternoon to Columbia College at Battle High School. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-14 on the season and 0-9 in American Midwest Conference play while the Cougars improve to 16-7-1 on the season and 7-1-1 on the season.

 

Junior first baseman Brayden Hatley (St. Louis, Mo.) singled down the right field line to start the Hornets second. Hatley moved to third on a groundout. Freshman catcher Jacob Frankera doubled down the left field line to score Hatley to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. The Cougars scored two in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.

 

Junior outfielder Hayden Waters doubled to right centerfield to start the Hornets sixth. Hatley doubled to right field to score Waters. Frankera reached on an error to score Hatley to cut the deficit to 9-3. The Cougars scored nine in the bottom of the sixth. 

 

Junior third baseman Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.) singled to start the seventh. Senior first baseman Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peters, Mo.) walked. Junior outfielder Alexander Fernandez (Caracas, Venezuela) doubled to score Henderson. Freshman infielder Riquendri Morel grounded out to score a run. Fernandez would score on a dropped third strike to cut the deficit to 18-6.

 

Fernandez and Hatley both recorded two hits while Waters, Frankera, Henderson and senior second baseman Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) all had one hit. Frankera had two runs batted in while Fernandez and Morel had one.

 

The Hornets return to action on Friday, March 27th at Hannibal-LaGrange with first pitch set for 12 pm.
