Hornets Baseball Picks Up 2-1 Win Over Hannibal Behind Complete Game from Mann


HANNIBAL, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball won 2-1 on Friday night at Hannibal-LaGrange at Hannibal High School. With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-14 on the season and 1-9 in American Midwest Conference play while the Trojans fall to 6-19 on the season and 1-9 in AMC play. 

 

Junior left fielder Alex Fernandez (Caracas, Venezuela) walked to lead off the game. Fernandez advanced to second on a groundout. Junior first baseman Brayden Hatley (St. Louis, Mo.) singled to left as Fernandez advanced to third. Hatley would steal second and on the throw from the catcher Fernandez would score to make it 1-0 Hornets.

 

Senior right fielder Tashaun Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind.) walked to start the top of the second. Coleman would advance to second and third on groundouts. A two-out single from Fernandez would score Coleman to make it 2-0 Hornets. The Trojans would score one run in the bottom of the third.

 

Both teams would have scoring opportunities throughout the game as the Trojans pitching staff and senior starting pitcher Joseph Mann (Bacolod, Philippines) would shut down the offenses.

 

Mann would pick up the complete game win while striking out nine and only allowing one run.

 

Fernandez led the way with two hits while Hatley, Coleman, junior shortstop Felix Daclan (Modesto, Calif.), senior first baseman Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peter's, Mo.), sophomore catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) and senior second baseman Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) all recorded a hit. Fernandez recorded one run batted in.

 

The Hornets return to action on Monday, March 30th at Hannibal-LaGrange with first pitch set for 1 pm with game two to follow.
