Hornets Baseball Falls in Hard Fought Game Against UHSP


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 4-2 on Friday afternoon at Stars Park against the University of Health Science and Pharmacy. With the loss, the Hornets are 3-20 on the season and 1-14 in American Midwest Conference play while the Eutectics are 17-18 on the season and 9-7 in AMC play.

 

The Eutectics would strike for one run in the second inning. Junior shortstop Felix Daclan (Modesto, Calif.) singled to start the Hornets second and advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts, but the Hornets were unable to score.

 

The Eutectics added a run in the third inning. Junior left fielder Alexander Fernandez (Caracas, Venezuela) singled to left with one out. Junior first baseman Brayden Hatley (St. Louis, Mo.) reached on a bunt single. Junior outfielder Hayden Waters singled to center to score Fernandez to cut the Eutectics lead to 2-1.

 

The Eutectics scored one run in the fourth. Senior right fielder Tashaun Coleman (Indianapolis, Ind.) singled to start the fourth. The Hornets would have first and second with nobody out and the Eutectics would get out of the jam with no runs scoring.

 

Fernandez led off the fifth with a single. The Hornets would have first and third and two outs, but were unable to score. The Eutectics extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the eighth.

 

Daclan was hit by a pitch to start the eighth. Coleman doubled down the right field line to score Daclan to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Hornets were unable to get any closer.

 

Fernandez, Kobe and Coleman all recorded two hits while Hatley, Waters, Daclan and senior first baseman Logan Schwerdt (Saint Peter's, Mo.) all had one hit. Waters and Coleman both had a run batted in.

 

The Hornets return to action on Saturday, April 11th at 12 pm and 2:30 pm against the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy at Stars Park. Tomorrow is senior day and senior day festivities will take place between games.
