Lady Hornets Fall in Four Sets at Williams Baptist


WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in four sets (22-25, 18-25, 25-23, 19-25) on Friday night at Williams Baptist University. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in American Midwest Conference play while the Lady Eagles improve to 7-8 on the season and 1-0 in AMC play. 

 

In set one, a kill from junior outside hitter Kaelin Rubin (Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale High School), two service aces from senior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic High School) and two attack errors by the Lady Eagles gave the Lady Hornets an early 5-1 lead. A 6-1 run from the Lady Eagles tied the score at seven. A kill from Rubin made it 10-7 in favor of the Lady Hornets. A kill from senior right side hitter Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central High School) gave the Lady Hornets a 14-13 lead. McReynolds tied the set at 18 with a kill. The Lady Hornets held a 20-19 lead before the Lady Eagles closed the set on a 6-3 run.

 

A kill from sophomore outside hitter Renise Powell gave the Lady Hornets a 2-1 lead in set two before the Lady Eagles used a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. Back-to-back kills from sophomore middle blocker Ayanna-Rae Leblanc cut the deficit to 9-7. A block from Powell and Leblanc and an ace from McReynolds put the Lady Hornets up 11-10. A block by junior outside hitter Jordyn Williams, a kill from sophomore middle blocker Kourtlyn Dowell and an ace from sophomore defensive specialist Mya Hendrix gave the Lady Hornets a 16-14 lead and forced a Lady Eagles timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Eagles used an 11-2 run to take set two 25-16.

 

In set three, a kill and block from Leblanc, an attack error by the Lady Eagles and a kill by Edison put the Lady Hornets ahead 5-2. A kill from Dowell extended the lead to 9-5. A 5-0 Lady Hornets run extended the lead to 15-9. A kill from Powell gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set three win.

 

An ace from Hendrix extended the lead to 3-1 early in set four. A 4-0 Lady Eagles gave them a 9-7 lead. A kill from Leblanc cut the deficit to 9-8. A kill from Rubin, two blocks by Dowell and three attack errors by the Lady Eagles gave the Lady Hornets a 16-15 lead. The Lady Eagles closed the set on a 10-3 run.

 

Rubin led the way with six kills while Dowell and Leblanc added five each. Senior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) had nine assists. Senior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods High School) had 13 digs. McReynolds had four assists. Leblanc recorded a solo block and two block assists.

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Saturday, September 12th at 11 am against Crowley's Ridge in Paragould, Ark.
