PARAGOULD, Ark. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in four sets (25-23, 18-25, 12-25, 15-25) on Saturday morning at Crowley's Ridge College. With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in American Midwest Conference play while the Pioneers improve to 10-5 on the season and 2-0 in AMC play.
A kill from senior right side hitter Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central High School) cut the deficit to 3-2 early in set one. A kill from junior outside hitter Kaelin Rubin (Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale High School) and an ace from senior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic High School) tied the set at five. Trailing 19-12, the Lady Hornets would get a kill from sophomore middle blocker Kourtlyn Dowell, two blocks from sophomore middle blocker Ayanna-Rae Leblanc and junior outside hitter Serenity Baker (Desoto, Texas/Desoto High School), a setting error and attack error from the Pioneers, a kill from sophomore outside hitter Renise Powell and a kill from Leblanc cut the deficit to 20-19. A serve error, a block by Dowell and a kill by Baker gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set one win.
Back-to-back kills from Rubin tied set two at three. An 8-0 run by the Pioneers gave them a 14-5 lead. Back-to-back attack errors by the Pioneers, a block by Powell and Leblanc and an ace from senior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods High School) cut the deficit to 14-9. A kill by Edison and three consecutive aces by sophomore defensive specialist Mya Hendrix cut the deficit to 20-15. The Pioneers scored five of the last eight points to win the set 25-18.
A block and kill by Dowell cut the deficit to 6-4 early in set three. A 7-1 run by the Pioneers extended their lead to 13-6. A block by Leblanc, an ace from junior outside hitter Jordyn Williams and a block from Leblanc cut the deficit to 15-10. The Pioneers closed the set on a 10-2 run to take set three.
A kill from Baker cut the deficit to 6-5 in set four. A 6-1 run by the Pioneers extended their lead to 14-9. The Pioneers closed on an 11-6 run to take the match in four sets.
Rubin, Edison and Powell led the way with six kills each. Williams recorded 15 assists while senior setter Isa Smith (Little Rock, Ark./Joe T. Robinson) recorded 11 assists. Leblanc recorded three solo blocks and three block assists. Hendrix recorded three aces. Foster recorded 14 digs.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, September 15th at 6 pm against Cottey College in Nevada, Mo.
