Lady Hornets Fall in Four Sets Against Mission


ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University women's volleyball fell in four sets (26-28, 25-22, 18-25, 22-25) against Mission University on Monday at the University of Health Sciences. With the loss, the Lady Hornets are 4-6 on the season and 2-4 in American Midwest Conference play while the Patriots improve to 5-12 on the season and 2-1 in AMC play.

 

A kill from senior outside hitter Kyla McReynolds (O'Fallon, Ill./Althoff Catholic High School) and a service ace from senior defensive specialist Dejah Foster (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods High School) gave the Lady Hornets an early 3-2 lead in set one. Kills from sophomore middle-blocker Ayanna-Rae Leblanc and McReynolds extended the lead to 5-3. A 7-3 Patriots run would give them a 14-10 lead. A service error, two attack errors, a kill by Leblanc and a block by Leblanc and McReynolds gave the Lady Hornets a 15-14 lead. A kill from sophomore outside hitter Renise Powell (England, Ark./England High School) and a block by senior right-side hitter Trinity Edison (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Central High School) and sophomore middle blocker Kourtlyn Dowell (Daingerfield, Texas/Jefferson High School) tied the set at 20. A block by McReynolds and Dowell, a kill from McReynolds, an ace from Foster and a block by Leblanc turned a 24-21 deficit into a 25-24 lead. The Patriots would score four of the final five points to take set one.

 

The Patriots raced out to a 5-2 lead in set two. A kill by McReynolds, an attack error by the Patriots, a kill from junior outside hitter Jordyn Williams, a kill by McReynolds, a block by McReynolds and Leblanc, an attack error by the Patriots and another McReynolds and Leblanc block gave the Lady Hornets a 9-5 lead. An ace from McReynolds extended the lead to 11-8. A kill from McReynolds, an ace from Foster and an attack error by the Patriots extended the lead to 17-13. A kill from Powell and an ace from senior outside hitter Millanie Davis (Houston, Texas/Fulshear High School) extended the lead to 22-18. A Powell kill put the Lady Hornets within two points of taking set two. A kill by Edison gave the Lady Hornets a 25-23 set two win.

 

A kill from McReynolds and two attack errors by the Patriots tied set three at four. A kill from Leblanc, a block by Williams and Leblanc and an attack error by the Patriots gave the Lady Hornets a 9-6 lead. A kill by sophomore defensive specialist Mya Hendrix extended the lead to 12-9. A 7-2 run by the Patriots gave them a 16-14 lead. A kill from Edison and an ace from Hendrix tied the set at 16. The Patriots closed set three on a 9-2 run.

 

Edison tied set four at two. An attack error by the Patriots, a block from Williams and Leblanc, back-to-back aces by Hendrix and an attack error by the Patriots gave the Lady Hornets a 7-4 lead. A 6-0 run by the Patriots gave them a 12-9 lead. A block by Edison and junior middle hitter Jada Anderson (Jefferson City, Mo./Capital City High School) and a kill from McReynolds cut the deficit to 13-12. Three kills from Edison and one from Williams would help the Lady Hornets go on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 16. A 4-0 run by the Patriots broke the tie and gave them a 20-16 lead. A kill from McReynolds, an attack error by the Patriots, a kill by Powell and an attack error by the Patriots would help the Lady Hornets during another 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 21-20. The Patriots scored four of the final six points to take the set and the match.

 

McReynolds led the way with 15 kills while Powell added 11 kills. Williams recorded 23 assists in the match. Foster recorded 15 digs. Hendrix and Foster both recorded three service aces. Leblanc recorded one sole block and five block assists.

 

The Lady Hornets return to action on Tuesday, September 29th at 6 pm at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.
