ST. LOUIS – It is an AWESOME time to be a Hornet and for Head Men's and Women's Soccer Coach Scot Vorwold, it became so much better on September 11, 2022. With the 1-0 victory over the Flames of the College of Saint Mary, who entered the contest undefeated, Vorwold became the all-time winningest head coach in women's soccer history for Harris-Stowe State University.
Director of Athletics, William Carey said, "Having had the ability to work with Coach Vorwold for several years now, I have had the opportunity to see, first-hand, the effort and work ethic that has led to this accomplishment. A lot of work goes into accomplishing just one win; early mornings, late nights, long road trips…It goes to show how special 72 is. I look forward to seeing what lies ahead for Coach Vorwold and the women's soccer program as they continue throughout this season and beyond!"
Scot Vorwold stated, "Program history and records is something that I looked at when I first took over the program in 2014 but honestly I didn't revisit it until last year. With last year's season being the best in program history, we started looking at other records like top goal scorers, assist leaders, most shut-outs, etc. That's when I realized I was just two wins short of tying Richard Rone (Rock) for all-time wins as women's head soccer coach."
Let's take a look on how this amazing feat came to pass. Vorwold became the women's head coach in 2014. Taking the helm of a team coming off a 1-11-1 season, it was an uphill battle. Undeterred, Vorwold stepped up and turned the program around.
During the 2014 season, the Hornets tallied a 3-13-1 overall record but the 2015 season was great with the team recording a 7-10-1 overall record and 6-6-1 in conference play. In 2016, the team continued gaining momentum by finishing the season 8-10-1.
The 2017 season saw the team drop slightly to 6-11 overall and bounce back stronger in 2018, with a record of 11-5-2. There was a slight drop in 2019, as the team completed the season 10-7-1 In 2020, the Hornets finished 6-6, however, please remember that was the year the Covid-19 pandemic began.
With the team coming together, Harris-Stowe recorded their best record under Vorwold, finishing 18-2 overall and reaching the AMC Women's Soccer Championship.
After eight seasons and four games into his ninth, Vorwold's team has signed his name into the Harris-Stowe State University Department of Athletics history books. Richard Rone, who was the first head coach for women's soccer at HSSU, retired in 2005 setting the record at 71 wins. Rone coached at HSSU from 1995-2005, coaching for a total of 11 season.
Rone set the record at 71 and Vorwold has increased it to 72, with no signs of slowing down.
"This was never a goal of mine but with success, records are broken and awards are won and we love to celebrate those team accomplishments. When I took over this program in 2014, it was my desire to build a program that other teams would respect and that players would be proud to be a part of. These last few years this team accomplished things that nobody thought was possible and now we hold ourselves to a higher standard with a belief that greater things are yet to come. In 1995, Rock built this program from scratch and is someone that I respect greatly. To surpass him in all time wins is a huge honor and blessing," said Vorwold.
*Please Note: A ball has been purchased for Coach Vorwold; any former women's soccer players who would like to sign, please come by the Athletic Department front office.
