ST. LOUIS – Harris-Stowe State University volleyball has added another victory to their season, defeating the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan University 3-0. Sets one and two were close but the Hornets dug deep and secured victory. The scores for each set are as follows:
Set 1: Harris-Stowe 25, Iowa Wesleyan 22
Set 2: Harris-Stowe 25, Iowa Wesleyan 10
Set 3: Harris-Stowe 25, Iowa Wesleyan 23
Three points made the difference and set the tone for an amazing match between Harris-Stowe and the Tigers. In the opening set, the Hornets scored first and last.
Jayden Sortor landed a kill on a pass from A'nia Ware and
Queen Patterson clinched the set with a powerful kill, also on a pass from Ware.
The second set was tied only once and was the only time that the score was close, as the Hornets swarmed. Sortor started the scoring once again and Ware was credited with the assist. Up 21-10, Harris-Stowe was playing their game, forcing back to back errors to take the set, after a kill from
Ariel Stroud lifted the team to 22.
Set three was closer than the first two but Harris-Stowe was able to take the set and the match.
Nyah Parker started the scoring for the Hornets with a service ace. After a furious pace and rallies, the set was knotted at 21. With the pressure mounting for the Tigers, Natilee Dentel handed Harris-Stowe the tie-breaking point on a service error. The 23
rd point was an attack error by Malie DaMate, pushing HSSU up 23-21. A bad serve by Patterson gifted the Tigers another point, bringing them within one of Harris-Stowe (23-22). Bethany Williams' attack error gave the Hornets match-point. A service error by
Ariyonna Johnson once again closed the gap to one point. Williams ended the match with an attack error, sealing the match in favor of Harris-Stowe.
Sortor paced the team with double-digit kills (11), while Johnson and Watson contributed seven and six respectively. Parker, Watson and
Mallorie Wooten each tallied one service ace. Sortor recorded five blocks. Stroud and
Nickeal Clark each added one.
Ware paced the team with 29 assists while Clark dug down deep for 19 digs. Clark and Parker each added one assist, while Watson added 10 digs and Ware totolled seven.
Williams led the Tigers with seven kills, Malie DaMate performed well with 11 assists and Alexis Hafenstine grabbed 22 digs.
