Baseball Falls in Hard Fought Games to William Woods

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Harris-Stowe State University baseball fell 7-4 in game one and 9-8 in eight innings in game two on Saturday against William Woods at Stars Park. With the two losses, the Hornets fall to 3-10 on the season and 1-7 in American Midwest Conference play while the Owls improve to 11-9 on the season and 5-5 in AMC play.

In game one, the Owls scored one in the first and fourth to hold a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Senior shortstop Austin Martin (Roxana, Ill.) led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Senior outfielder Skywalker Mann (Lee's Summit, Mo.) singled to right. Senior first baseman Stephen Huggins (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) would reach second on an error that would score Martin from second and put Mann on third. Senior third baseman Malvin Gutierrez (Harlem, New York) would hit a sacrifice fly to score Mann. Sophomore catcher Dima Cornell-Neal (Trumbull, Ct.) would double to right scoring Huggins to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead.

The Owls would score three in the fifth to go up 5-3. Neal walked with two outs in the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Carter Henderson (San Diego, Calif.) walked. Junior middle infielder Michael Khatkar (Vancouver, Canada) would single to score sophomore shortstop Jordan Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) from second as Bradley ran for Neal. The Owls would add two more in the seventh to win 7-4.

Mann would record two hits, while Martin, Huggins, Neal and Khatkar each recorded a hit. Gutierrez, Neal and Khatkar all recorded a run batted in.

In game two, Mann would single Martin after he would single with two outs and advance to second on a wild pitch to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. The Owls would tie the game up in the third.

Freshman catcher Jayden Matthews (Fayetteville, Ark.) would single to center to lead off the bottom of the third. Bradley would run for Matthews and steal second. Freshman centerfielder Adrian Martinez (Davie, Fla.) would single home Bradley. After a walk to Martin to make it first and second and a wild pitch to move them to second and third a double from Mann would score Martin and Martinez to make it 4-1 Hornets.

A single by senior outfielder Jeremy Kelly (Oranjestad, Aruba) to start the fourth would bring up Gutierrez. Gutierrez would extend the lead with a two-run homer to left to push the lead to 6-1. A five fun fifth by the Owls tied the game at six.

A one out single by Kelly and a double by Gutierrez made it second and third in the bottom of the sixth. Matthews would single to left center scoring both Kelly and Gutierrez to make it 8-6 Hornets. Two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for the Owls gave them the 9-8 extra-inning win.

Kelly and Matthews each had three hits while Mann and Gutierrez added two hits and Martinez and Martin had one hit each. Mann had three RBI's, while Gutierrez and Matthews had two RBI's and Martinez had one.

The Hornets are back in action on Sunday, March 9th at Stars Park against William Woods at 12 and 2 pm.
